circumcision: how to cope

Please share your experiences about circumcising your son especially those outside Pakistan.

I am pregnant and i am very disturbed about this topic and how will i cope if i have Son. I am not against it but have seen few babies going through. Is there any way to reduce the pain or is it possible to get it done with anesthetic.

Here what i am told is dr only asks to give panadol and nothing else before the procedure and even after.

Why dr dont give local anesthetic at least at the time of procedure. I had few biopsies done on my breasts and it was under with local anesthetic all the time; its minor in comparison to circumcision.

I am very disturbed about topic. As far as i know not many doctors do nowdays. Yes, I know everyone get its done and its not big deal; maybe i am wrong but its genuine concern.

Re: circumcision: how to cope

My baby was fine, we did not have to give him any meds. We took care of the area by keeping it clean and applying petroleum jelly.

They took my son to the nursery and did it there…he was back with me after 30 mins. I didn’t want to see him if he was crying or anything lol. When he came back he was sleeping…and he didnt cry or anything when i did his diaper changes. Like the pevious poster said, we did the same…gauze pads + A&D ointment/petroleum jelly every time his diaper changed. It wasn’t a big deal.

Re: circumcision: how to cope

was he given any medication before the procedure???

so it was done at the hospital? in sydney they dont do. plus with my nephews they had ring thing put on and when it healed it automatically came off. so there was no gauze pads or anything. mum used to apply petroleum jelly on nappy so it doesnt stick on it.

wat about when he urinated; did he cry?
I am still haunted by the painful cries of my nephews when they urinated.

Re: circumcision: how to cope

If you put enough petroleum jelly he won’t feel the pain. Just keep it clean and lots and lots of petroleum jelly. He’ll be fine. Of course he’ll cry but you’ll be surprised how fast it heals.

Re: circumcision: how to cope

I’m the mother of 3 boys and like the above posters have said, it was no big deal at all. I don’t recall any of them reacting adversely or having difficulty

Re: circumcision: how to cope

I am in the US, and have had positive experiences with both my sons.

The procedure was done the same day as their births, I also did not want to see the actual procedure. Lots of petroleum jelly, gauze etc, being careful when changing the diaper… and that is it.

Don’t worry to much.

Re: circumcision: how to cope

mine was done in the hospital on day 2 after his birth. the surgeon took him away and he was back within 15 minutes. they used an anesthetic to numb the area in his case, but i’ll be honest, its pretty distressing. i cried a ton and a half when i saw him and i felt horribly guilty for putting him through the pain. he was restless and uncomfortable for about two days after but then he healed very quickly and a week later, the redness had subsided and he was good.

Re: circumcision: how to cope

the petroleum jelly is so the gauze won’t stick to his penis, its not to prevent pain. he will feel it- its a painful procedure- but they do heal remarkably fast and the surgeons know what they are doing, so they’re quick. try not to dwell on it. its the only way to get past it.

Re: circumcision: how to cope

i am in middle east n went to hospital for the procedure…like everyone said it took 15 minutes n they gave panadol to him so he was sleeping most of the time…he used to cry a bit while peeing only…and was all fine for rest of the day Alhumdulillah

Re: circumcision: how to cope

I think every baby is different cos my son never cried when urinating or during diaper changes. I was expecting loads of crying and discomfort from him…but he’s been amazing mA. =/

They do have the ring thing in some hospitals, but we didn’t. And yeah the entire procedure was done in the hospital. Really though, babies heal up fast and it’s not a big deal, like everyone else stated. Don’t think about it too much and you and the baby will be fine, iA.

Hospitals dnt do here. Have to go to a private dr after a week or so.

How many days after birth did u guys fet it dne?

Re: circumcision: how to cope

Only very few hospitals do it here and the one where my son was born is not one of them. So we also had to go to a private doctor a week after he was born. Back then he was the only Muslim doctor in our town who would perform circumcisions, as far as I know. But he was very good, Alhamdulillah. We had an appointment and were in and out of the clinic in 20 minutes. Recovery was also very quick.

The sooner you get it done the better it is for the baby.

circumcision: how to cope

Omg Vaseline treatment eek! I live in the uk but got my sons done from Pak they numbed the area and used the ring method which falls off once area is healed. The dr gave us calpol and an ointment to put on the area and recommended baby sit in water with a bit of dettol in it. Worked wonders. He only cried wen he did his first pee after that he was fine.

Re: circumcision: how to cope

for my son, it was done in the hsopital in the US on the firfth day of his birth.. it was done by the same ob who had him delivered and the procedure was less than 15 mins. Apparently, they had my husband wet his finger ins sgar syrup and put that finger in baby’s mouth.. while he sucked on the finger, they did the job! thats all.. no cries, no meds nothing! we were told to apply petroleum jelly at every diaper change and alhamdulillah it healed pretty well. my mom was amazed that he came back to the room in a diaper.. apparently in Pakistan, they dont let you put on anything for a few days so you have to be on guard all the time.. she had seen it for my 4 nephews in Pakistan and how painful it was for them and the family! but alhamdulillah no issues here! it healed within 10 days!

Re: circumcision: how to cope

Like Gtg said, in the US, it’s the OB who does the circumcision, right there in the same hospital before the baby and mother are released. Even with my twins, and their extended stay in the NICU, both were circumcised fairly quickly…like within a few days of being born. All three healed within 7-10 days, and like stated previously, petroleum jelly & gauze is all that’s needed for healing

Re: circumcision: how to cope

My son got his circumcision done in the UK at a private clininc. It took him 7 days to heal and with no problems Alhamdulilah!

Re: circumcision: how to cope

Like gtg n khattichic said..my sons circumcision was done 2nd day… They took him to nursery n told us that they r gonna give him sucrose n it will b all fine .. He came bk fine n did not cry n ad no problems..with diaper change or anything … We just used to put good blob of Vaseline n thts it… N it healed pretty soon Alhamdulillah ..
Oh yeah once his diaper got yellow it was something looked like yellowish stuff.. So we went this dr if thrs any infection or something by but she said up its normal it happens soo.. We continued applying Vaseline n it was all Gud…

Re: circumcision: how to cope

Pain or no pain…you must get it done.
