CIO's strategy

I heard this a while ago but reading something about envelopes today, I was reminded of this…joke (I guess).

The CIO of a F1000 company resigned to accept another job and was transitioning his duties to his newly hired replacement. The new guy understandably was eager to grab as much wisdom from the old guy and asked all kinds of questions about everyone in the company.

After a while, the old guy said.."look don’t worry, you’ll do just fine. Just take these 3 numbered envelopes and keep them safe. Everytime you get into trouble, open one, serially…and all will be well. So saying, he left.

After about 4 months, the staff was in a turmoil, It budget was all spent and in general, the CIO was not in a happy state. So he went and opened the envelope marked 1. It said “just blame it all on the earlier regime - tell everybody the old CIO has messed things up so badly!”. The new guy used the strategy with great success.

All was well, for a few more months, but things got tough again. The revised budget was spent, some key staff quit and stuff failed. He opened envelope number 2. It said “blame it on the staff but tell them you take full responsibility”. Well, the noble gesture worked and the CEO and COO said “what a grand guy!”..

Ofcourse come year end, the situation was hot again…more failed systems, more staff departure, more over budgets…The now old new CIO went and opened the envelope #3.

“PREPARE 3 ENVELOPES” it said.

smart guy :)

That aint a joke. That is a true story. Under the Soviet Union, i believe Kruschov (spelling) made the comment with 2 letters. One blame me. Second write a second letter.
