CIA Chief resigns

Porter Goss seemed to be another one of those close Bush allies, but his resignation yesterday has been confusing. Of course after a big step is taken bubbles rise making it seem obvious. Some reports say big scandals may be uncovered soon. Wonder what’s up…
btw, what’s the exact procedure of installing CIA chiefs…?

Re: CIA Chief resigns

i think that the position holder is a member of the cabinet - so he’d get nominated by the president.

i wonder whats up w/ the resignation…

Re: CIA Chief resigns

Was Porter against warrantless eavesdropping? or could it be that he couldn't work well with Negroponte?

He himself wants it to remain a mystery;

So I Guess 5Abi, these allegations could be true.

Captain, yeah his issues with Negroponte are also being highlighted.

p.c.p., Thanks for the link.

Any clues when Hayden retired from the USAF?

Re: CIA Chief resigns

Haris

I Dont think he is “retired” from USAF. He was promoted to the rank of General in 2005. Since 2005 he has served as Negroponte’s chief deputy after being nominated by Bush. Before that he was the director of NSA (No Such Agency).

He is all set to be nominated by Bush to be the CIA director after Goss’s resignation (pending Senate confirmation).

Re: CIA Chief resigns

Hmm thanks 5Abi, I too had wondered whether he was still serving, I had assumed he may've been retd due to his high profile intelligence role.
But this procedure is rather confusing, can a serving military officer be appointed to such a post according to US norms?

Re: CIA Chief resigns

He was a Lt. General in USAF while serving as the Director of NSA - the super-duper high tech intel agency. All this was before 9/11. I guess this answers your question about being a norm.

Re: CIA Chief resigns

So finally it’s been announced, but;

*"The Senate must confirm Hayden’s nomination. **Some legislators, including a few from President Bush’s Republican Party, have voiced concerns about putting a military officer at the head of a civilian agency. *"

Seems they do have issues with his being a soldier now…
Has the US president been learning some things from Pakistan…? :smiley:

Re: CIA Chief resigns

that's for show.. his nomination will sail through.. if not.. there's always the recess appointment..
