What do you, as parents do, to make Eid special? At Christmas time, the entire city is decorated and we see gorgeous trees and ornaments all over the place.
I’m not going to lie. I LOVE CHRISTMAS! I love the decorations, I love the chocolates and I love the festive spirit in the office where nobody wants to work. Past few years I have cooked a wicked turkey with all the trimmings. I love the lights at night time. I love the colours and the really, unique, housing decorations. I saw one house that had an inflatable helicopter with a reindeer inside on their front lawn. I saw another house with an inflatable slide with some polar bears and penguins on it (very, very cute), also on their front lawn. These decorations are fun for kids … and well I enjoy looking at them as well. I don’t have any up at my house because I am sure this costs an arm and a leg and I have no desire to pay a huge electricity bill for all these decorations.
We have Eid twice a year. How do you make it special for your kids? What do you do, as individuals, to celebrate this occasion with non-Muslim adults and children?
I really hope you include non-Muslims in our festivities cause they like to include us in theirs …
well our kidlet just had his first couple of Eid's and he's tiny so we didn't do much out of the usual, however, next year insha'Allah when he's around 18 months, we will be going all out- taking time off from work, attending chand raat, dressing up in shalwar kameez, making special food and desserts, and putting up lights at our place. we'll also attend eid namaz iA with his other little desi buddies. when he's older, i'm thinking i'd like to send treats along to his class for eid so they know what it is too.
as well he's only 6 months now so next year also, insha'Allah, we'll be celebrating his first christmas properly with his dad's family and putting up the tree, decorations, etc. too.
One if my very close friends has a 4 and 3 year old and we celebrate eid for them, with them! They get wrapped presents (tons if them), help decorating the house, wear festive clothes, enjoy nice meals and this year we baked n decorated cupcakes with the lil ones..everyone ( including us) takes a day off n celebrate with them!
I love eid n I can't wait for my baby to grow up so I can enjoy it with him!
This yea he was due around eid n I had his clothes picked in case he made his appearance before or on eid day but nah he chose to stay inside for couple of more days :D
Our Eids before we had our daughter had been pretty boring. The husband only sometimes took a day off,we only sometimes visited a friend and had dinner together and that was pretty much it.
One of the things that changed with a lot of others after we had our daughter is that I have automatically started to feel all festive around Eid.She is young to actually understand the concept (she is 20.5 months m’A) but both Eids this year we had plans for new outfits with matching accessories and plans for attending chaand raat events.Unfortunately both chaand raat events got cancelled (due to hurricane around Eid ul fitr and then a terrible snow storm around Eid ul adha),but you get the point.
I got her gifts for Eid ul fitr this year and last year as well and I plan on continuing with the tradition of getting her something for Eid,Inshallah.Same goes with putting up maybe some lights or displaying all the Eid cards etc.I know for sure I cannot make it as festive as Christmas when living in the USA but anything we can do as parents.
P.S…I absolutely love Christmas time…!I spent a few minutes looking at the Santa in the mall and feeling all happy about it.I love the lights and decorations in front yards and all the Christmas songs playing everywhere. The other day I was singing 'tis the time to be jolly…la la la lala…" and my daughter kept on saying ‘la la la lala lala alal’ all the way home…
I need to feel this excited for Eids too…
