So the randomest thing occurred to me…but how do normal ppl eat meat that has bones in it? Like, typical salan botis are kinda small and some pieces you just can’t really cut with a fork and knife… I have my way of eating it when I’m totally alone (heat halfway, tear the botis, and heat again), but I think it seems a little awkward to be tearing up botis in front of people…
so whaddya do in polite company? Or is it understood amongst desis that this is the kinda food that u just can’t really be too neat with, so it doesn’t look messy?
I’m not a huge fan of meat and don’t eat red meat.
Chicken… Normally I just eat it if it’s bbq’ed (that too just the wings because they’re small and easy to manage). No chicken at all in salan form. I just eat the curry/shorba when in gatherings.
I eat without any worries of what impression I am making
usually I fish out boneless meat from the salan, this is not too messy I just cut in with my fork’s side edge and it tears away perfectly, for bbq boti I usually get leg pieces.
If u eat it with rice use a folk to eat, and then u can use ur fingers to break up the rest, and then bite the rest off. That’s how u eat nandos too, just enjoy n eat lol
I dont understand , whats so embarassing about eating a boti even in the most formal setting?
Personally, I would try to chop the meaty bits off with the fork, but if that seems to be a struggle then no harm in using your finger tips to separate the meaty bits in one go and then you can clean your fingers and carry on eating with the spoon/fork what ever ..
Its one of those things, desi food is best eaten with ones hands .. like roti salan for example .. i have seen some lame desi’s trying to act all formal and eating roti salan with a fork I keep wondering why us desi’s feel so embarassed in eating neatly with our hands when even in the most sophisticated setting, a gora wouldnt give a damn even if they have to dip the bread in the soup or stew to eat up their food !
CB, That’s true. When I went for an office lunch with goras to an Indian restaurant, the goras were eating with roti while I was struggling with a fork!
Polite company. Hmm.
No taking the haddi to your mouth to rid it of all the boti. I try to get as much out, with just my fingers.
I’d probably just waste the boti if it were something very formal(business). But aside from that, no boti goes to waste. Jiye boti!
And when you’re at home everything goes. Back in high school I was so crazy about haddis, that I used to employ a hammer and screwdriver to break them down. Not anymore!
And who like’s chabni(cartilage). Hai! That’s fun too.
