Sub-continent is a place where spirituality got intense values. People collect money all their lives to visit their holy places. This is probably related to people from all the religion.
There is this classic story written by Asad Muhammad Khan ‘Baasooday ki Maryam’. The story is about a maid (Maryam aka Anna buwa) who collected money from her salary to go on Hajj, but had to expend that on treatment of her son. She tried again to collect money, but before that she dies. The story is beautiful written, very well read by Zia Muhuiddin and dramatised.
Are these characters still alive in our society? It seems that materialism has affected spirituality. One who got wealth are eager for having trips to west and keep this important journey for last years of life.
Have you come across any persons who collected money to go on this journey?
I know one person who i can relate to this story. She was a midwife and she managed to save amount for an umrah every year and performed two Hajj.People donated her more and more knowing her intentions and when she died the amount she left behind was enough to pay one more visit.
I don't see such people around anymore at least none that i know of.

the character in the story didn't accept any help from anyone. In her words 'doosron ke paise se kia munh leke jaongi'. The character depicts the true message of Islam that if you have ability to earn then don't accept help from anyone.
My dadi had wish for visiting holy places, but she couldn't do that.. she helped her husband to built house for their children. In doing so and educating their children they couldn't get opportunity to go for Haj/ Umra. I had seen longing in her eyes to visit the places.
Do you think it’s wrong to go on hajj with the donated money in the form of zakaat. She didn’t solely depend on people but saved from her earnings.
Us k bad jo kami beshi reh jati the wo log pori kr dety thy.

I don't think that there are any restirctions in doing Haj on others money. Most people (aged one) perform Haj alongwith their children who sponsored them.
yes, there are people who still do that. as a matter of fact, one of my close relatives saved money all his life and he was able to make the Hajj trip. this had a happy ending, alHamdolillah! :)

yes, it's allowed....
sometimes it's even strangers are sent for Hajj on behalf of some deceased person...it's called "Hajj-e-Badal"...
remember the story in the movie Coolie, an Amitabh starer, where Amitabh was supposed to do Hajj-e-Badal for his ailing parent, he was supposed to go to Saudi Arabia for Hajj but since he is NOT a Muslim so he could NOT go...in the movie, he makes an excuse and sends someone else.

Do you think that same passion still continues in new generation? We do see more young people performing Haj now.
Does this saving money for a long period and then finally using it for Haj purpose affect life of a person more positively than a person who perform Haj using money by looting others?

of course...these days, more young people doing Hajj is because of the opportunity they have...working in Saudi Arabia, all paid Hajj by parents.
some, no doubt go there as religious tourists and as a result they return the same as they were before the going to Hajj...their heart N soul don't change and this is one of the signs of qayaamat. in the end of time, a huge number of aazemiin will go to perform Hajj but Allah will accept the Hajj of ONLY ONE of them.
if the life style of a Haji doesn't change, its a sign of his Hajj NOT being accepted by Allah.
There was this habit in old people to go to all relatives before going for Haj to get forgiveness of any past wrongdoings / abrupt behavior. Don't see this is being followed now in true spirit. That again enforces the lines by Bulleh Shah:
Makkah gayan
Gal mukdi nahin
Paven sau sau jummen padhaiye
Ganga gayan
Gal mukdi nahin
Paven sau sau gothey khaiye
Gaya gayan
Gal mukdi nahin
Paven sau sau panD padhaiye
Bulleh Shah!
Gal taiyon mukdi
