Jawad Bashir; an actor-cum-director-cum-musician-cum-writer-cum… well, you get the picture. Besides being in the entertainment field for years, he conceived many creative videos and made sure that the kids would never go without music (Dr. aur Billa). But long gone are those days with classy videos, which actually made us laugh for a change. Long gone. Recycled storylines, the over usage of bright colors and the most horrid pop songs ever; that seems to be the themes used in all of Jawad Bashir’s latest ventures. Once known as the brains behind many good sitcoms, he now finds pleasure in providing us with videos at which we can gape and wonder what the world is coming to. This article takes an in-depth analysis in trying to crack what exactly he thinks he’s doing! One of his latest videos with a supposed ‘singer’ whose name I don’t know and would never liked to be told, “Jadun Da Mein Duur Gaya”, has the same boy-meets-girl love theme which we all are oh-so-tired of. The thing that surprises me the most is how Jawad could choose to direct such a disgrace-to-the-name-of-a song video. Poor guy, he must have been very, very short on cash. Another of Jawad’s videos, “Chaand Sajna”, which never fails to irritate me, is all about how a sheher ka larka goes to meet mommy in the village, sheher ka larka falls in love with gaoun ki larki, who happily prances around with him, in the most disgusting colored gear until mommy finds out and disapproves; finally mommy gives in and they all live happily ever after. Wonderful! And if that wasn’t enough, go watch “Mein Te Mann Lai Haar”, another one of the ‘Bashir Masterpieces’. Guy hits on girl, girl eager to get with guy, both prance around (note to self: pay Ali Sher for dancing lessons), four days later they are on their way to their respective destinations, not giving a heed to the fact that a day ago they were mercilessly in love. Err… not a very good example for the kiddies. The video of Seher’s latest song, “Akh Barhki”, definitely takes the cake. Guys with no dress sense, the oh-so-cheap eye winking and whistling, male dancers in the background and Mani; the combination of all despicable things can now be seen all at once. Wait, that one was not directed by Jawad Bashir. Well, it should’ve been! A similar video to “Akh Barhki” is Fariha Parveiz’s “Kokhla Chupa >Ke” (KCK). A confession though, I’ve never seen KCK’s video. I mean not all of it. Whenever I see that the parrot green, my hand goes into this auto mode of flipping the channel. It’s a reflex action I swear. So really, I’ll let the viewers think for themselves on this one. Cheapness aside, what really gets to be is the unrealism present in >Mr. Bashir’s work. For instance, Shiraz Uppal’s “Tera Te Mera”, with the typical love theme with a few coats of vulgarity, the video has been set in a village layout, with guys and girls dancing around together, girls drenching themselves in water and then dancing, girl wearing an obnoxious whatcha-ma-call-it and then dancing. Oh and did I mention girls dancing? Okay, okay you may think I’ve been a bit harsh. He can be original at times; I mean take his own video, “Baal Mein Karthi Hai Kangi”. Instead of ZQ falling in love with Ali Sher for the third time, she falls in love with… drum rolls please… Jawad Bashir. All of this makes me wonder where has all the creativity and sensibility gone in Jawad? The same creativity he once showed in videos like Dr. aur Billa’s “Mujhay Tum Say Hogaya Hai Pyaar”, Jawad Ahmed’s “Tu Hi Dildar Hai” and in sitcoms like Theen Bata Theen. Sigh. I wish the old Jawad Bashir would come back to us. And fast! In the end, a few words from the wise to Mr. Bashir, which are his very own: “Jenay doh bai jeenay doh, jenay doh bai jeenay doh, jenay doh bai jeenay doh, jenay doh bai jeenay doh, jenay doh bai jeenay doh, jenay doh bai jeenay doh.” – Jenay Doh by Dr. aur Billa.
