Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

Ok im at university…a very good one infact…i have been told that once i come out i should be able to do whatever i want to do…

Now i remember when me and my friend started…he wanted to be a schoolteacher and i wanted to work for an NGO and help people in the third world…

However as the reality of having real money and responsiblity…priorities naturally change…He wants to be a trader and i want to be a management consultant…

Naturally we like the job ideas…the internships were good…b ut obviously money has got the better of us…

And im sure when the respinsiblites appear it will be even more concrete…when family…mortgages etc come by…

Just wondering if anyone here didnt sell out and if they stuck to what they wanted to do…or is everyone doing something they never set out to do?..

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

I'm doing what I always wanted to do -- teach.

I've heard the following lines:

"But you're smart, why are you teaching?"
"You could be a doctor or a lawyer, why waste your time teaching?"
"You can't do anything with studying literature."
"You're great at science, why waste your time?"
"I guess teaching is worth it because you get the summers off and you have a short work day."

I have completed my Pre-med requirements, I have a BA and an MA in English, and an MS in Education, and I stayed committed to teaching. It isn't easy -- at all. And there are times when I felt like I would get so much more respect and more money with other fields, I still feel like that now. Most jobs would be much less work. I'm working 24 hours a day. My husband makes fun of me because sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with a desperate need to write down something I just thought about for a lesson. The job is physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting. But when I"m in the classroom, actually interacting with kids, I know that I made the right choice. Maybe in the future I'll try something different. But I'm glad I stuck with teaching, despite the naysayers.

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

i enjoyed computers all my life, did co-op in there, studied that, trained in that, heck, took few certifications and diploma in that too.. but as i was coming out towards professional field, i realized, this is not what i wanted as occupation.. time of discovery came a lil late :-)

i took an entry level position within the place i was working part-time.. worked my way up, and eventually within 3 years, i now make double of what i was making before... (lil higher what i WOULD be making if i sticked to my field, at this age)

and, its not REALLY related to computers, maybe 2% of what i studied and trained in..

i dunno what attracted me more.. money, or NATURE of work.. but i got the best of both worlds now, alhamdullillah i LOVE my work, and money is very satisfying..

however, i DO feel i sellout :-) but again, i dunno how happy i WOULD'VE been in computers/computers-related career...

i love photography, optics and lighting, i took part in coverage of lots of live/recorded events in life.. its my passion, but i can NEVER think of making it my occupation.. its like something i cant live with the thought of making money out of it

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

I stuck to my guns and achieved my goals.

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

I always wanted to do something related to peoples health/medicine.....

but didnt want to directly interact with patients (eg. doctors/dentists/optometrists).....so i chose pharmacy...

but 3 years before i made this decision i wanted to do something computer related cuz i was always good at computers. even thought about graphic designing.....when it came to applying to uni, i chose pharmacy for all my choices :)

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

...my friends works in a pharmacist, how much do you see yourself earning once you've graduated?

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

it goes up every year. i want to work as locum....and they earn around £250 per day. and we get to choose whichever days we want to work.....so if i want i can only work 3 days a week....or full 7:) or half a day....or full day.

normal pharmacists pay starts around £30k and goes up every year. pharmacy managers get much much more

for me its locum....so u can say £250 per day insha-allah

if i have my own pharmacy then it'll be more than that insha-allah

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

My degree is in Management and Management Information Systems. My internship was in CapitalOne's IT dept. Now my professional job is to handle the Business Bankers' Incentives program. There are only 2 people running that program for CapitalOne (A Global Company): Myself and my co-worker. It involves calculating incentives using automated programs and formulas etc. My pay-grade is a Grade E. It is REALLY GOOD for a fresh out of school person to start off with a grade E. Grades A-D is considered senior management of the company, next comes Grade E, that is considered Middle Management.

So, to sum it up: I am in middle management of a fortune 500 company as a recent graduate without any much management experience and I do MIS related stuff. So I guess I am doing what I intended to do.

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

I got a BA in Fine Arts, painting and was applying to do my Masters when I met my husband. As soon as we became 'engaged' he asked me if i planned on pursuing it and I decided not to. After marriage I took a few art classes and then worked full time in a totally unrelated field. We have two daughters now and eventually i plan on continuing with my art when they're in school full time. But more than art I want to apply my cooking skills at soup kitchens across America. And do alot of Namaaz to make up for my teenage years.

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

I wanted to do something more meaningful than MIS or human resourceses like change the world or something.

Re: Choices...Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

i always wanted to be a doctor. unfortunatly due to my terrible marks, i was not able to get admission!! then i swiched from engineering to english literature (which was by the way my first love in high school) and now i have a job in public health and i love it!!!!!!! and the money is good too and there is lots of learning opportunities as i do a lot of the same work as doctors are doing here (ie research) :)

Re: Choices…Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?

YOu should have done something with it at that very moment. Once you accept that error of payroll it becomes a statement and statemens are never wrong..

This guy at work… in differnet deparmtnet was told he was going to get 55k but when he came in they went oh we made a mistake… it should have been $43k .. now i understand mistake of 55 to 45 not 43…

Now that guy is sueing the agency…

Re: Choices…Who chose the money? and who chose to do what they wanted to do?
