^ Disagree!
It's men that stopped opening doors, pulling-out chairs, kissing hands, buying flowers for women.
Re: Chivarlry is dead....
yes I think it's dead.
Blame it on feminist moment of wanting to be equal.
of course men are getting equal cause no women ever opened door for a man!
Its dead because men are lazy
omg, was gonna say the SAME thing!
men these days just dont give the same effort as they used to a century or 2 ago.
Re: Chivarlry is dead....
The usual suspects ready to blame men. Not surprising. But lets go into this in a little more indepth.
Women are equal to men right? Then why is there a need for chivarlry?
"Chiva*r*lry is dead"
It appears that spelling is dead, too.
:(

May you rot in hell...with a unpatched beta copy of Ultima!!

^The usual sardaar of all usual suspects, always ready to blame women. Jeez u'd blame flatulence on women too (my girlfriend bought me a bean burrito, because of her i'm suffering)
Re: Chivarlry is dead....
He who smelt it - dealt it. Words to live by.
But the question remains if women are equal to men why is there a need for chivalry?
Re: Chivarlry is dead....
CM, first, the definition of Chivalry:[ol]
[li]The medieval system, principles, and customs of knighthood.[/li][li]
[/li][li]The qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women.[/li][li]A manifestation of any of these qualities.[/li][/ol]
[li]A group of knights or gallant gentlemen.[/li]
So its more than just "gallantry toward women". Yes, I think women had the bigger hand in squashing chivalry by asserting equal rights. If women want to be treated as equals then that means not to single them out for special treatment, like opening doors, standing when a woman enters or leaves etc.
It isnt right to demand only part of equality. Either choose equality or not, you cant have it both ways IMO. But still, I am more of a traditionalist personally and I am always honored when a man opens a door for me or offers his seat.
In Pakistan, Chivalry was never there to begin with
Forget discovering who killed it.
It was only when I arrived in USA that I discovered that men open doors for you, offer their seats, etc… I was amazed.
and I loved your comment directed at Mad Scientist about rotting in hell with an un-patched beta copy of Ultima… I gather you guys are fans of RPGs/MMORPGs ![]()
Re: Chivarlry is dead....
It's definitely not dead.
I don't think that chivalry's dead as much as common courtesy is waning.
While, I'd love for a guy to hold open the door for me or give up his seat on the train, I can't complain when women on the same train who are hale and hearty don't get up for the elderly/infirm or last week the woman who was so looked so far gone in her pregnancy, I thought she was going to go into labour.
I think there are some men who wonder whether the feminist is going to bite their head off for being a gentlemen. But I think for other men, the concept of courtesy no longer exists. But the lack of courtesy applies equally to men and women.
I think I'm pretty fortunate in that the guys I know are gentlemen - so no complaints from me.
Re: Chivarlry is dead....
Opening doors is a courtesy extended to others. I open and hold doors for men and women equally. And no I am not gay.
Re: Chivarlry is dead....
I haven't seen any woman biting a man's head off cz he held a door for her or offered up a seat.
Re: Chivarlry is dead....
^ this could be interpreted in so many different ways

One of the lawyers I work with tells the story of the lady first-year associate who started off at the same time he did. She wanted to be treated like one the "guys", i.e. going to bars after work, sporting events. Any reminder that she was different than them, namely a woman, she resented and she brushed off "chivalrous acts".
Re: Chivarlry is dead....
I'vemet women like this too, when I was working. Actually the corporate "sensitivity training" sessions that most large companies require their employees to attend will teach that everyone is to be treated absolutely equally. I guess that means if you're a door-opener then do it for all, not just for women. Or dont do it at all.

So a man can share a dirty joke with a woman as long as he shares it with men? lol
I guess that would fall in a different category of corporate abuse.
