China criticizes U.S. human rights record
China slamed United States Thursday, issuing a report on U.S. human rights violations one day after Washington issued a similar report on China.
This is the seventh consecutive year that China has issued its Human Rights Record of the United States in response to the U.S. State Department’s annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices.
Released by China’s State Council, the 14,500-word report described the United States as a violent society where rights are routinely abused, where poverty is highest in the developed world, and where discrimination against minorities is widespread.
Citing U.S. Justice Department figures of more than 5.18 million violent crimes in 2004, amounting to one violent crime victim for every 47 U.S. residents, the report characterized the United States as a society rampant with violent crimes.
It slams the United States for ongoing illegal detentions, unauthorized wiretapping and surveillance of phone calls and e-mails.
Citing abuse by U.S. soldiers of Iraqi detainees and many more cases, the report concluded, “The U.S. government should stop provoking international confrontation on the issue of human rights … and contribute more to international human rights cooperation.”
