Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

This was bound to happen. When you open a country to global trade, ideas follow the $$$. It is possible that Hong Kong may become a bigger headache for China (as compared to Taiwan).

Do you all fear another Tiananmen bloodshed in Hong Kong?

Thousands march in Hong Kong

HONG KONG, China (AP) – Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of Hong Kong Sunday to protest the slow pace of democratic reforms, intensifying pressure on the government to speed up the movement toward full democracy.

Organizers said about 250,000 people, with many clad in black, took part in the march – much higher than analysts’ estimate of between 50,000 to 100,000. But police said they counted only 40,000 people when the march began in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park. Many joined the rally along the way.

“One man, one vote. Popular elections,” chanted the protesters, who kept streaming through Hong Kong’s busy downtown streets to the government headquarters in the Central district until several hours after the march started.

Pro-democracy lawmakers, who organized the rally, said the higher-than-expected turnout means Hong Kong leader Donald Tsang should rethink his political reform package that falls far short of full democracy.

“He should reflect directly to the state leaders that there is a huge turnout today, so they should rethink the package and let Hong Kong people have a timetable for universal suffrage,” said Lee Wing-tat, head of Hong Kong’s biggest opposition, the Democratic Party.

A broad spectrum of people participated in Sunday’s protest, with many parents bringing their children, elderly, teachers and office workers.

Hong Kong’s former No. 2 official and first-time marcher, Anson Chan, also took part. Chan, who remains highly popular and influential despite quitting as head of the civil service in 2001, had previously drawn fire from Beijing by criticizing it for rejecting quick democratic reforms.

“I just feel there are moments in one’s life that when you have to stand up and be counted. And for me, this is one of those moments,” Chan told reporters before the march. “I believe democracy to be good for Hong Kong and in good time, when the time is ripe, it would also be good for my country.”

Other marchers also expressed a desire for greater political rights.

“We need to choose a perfect and suitable leader by ourselves, not by the central government,” said Kirby Leung, a 55-year-old sales manager.

The Hong Kong government has argued the Chinese territory isn’t ready for full democracy. It has urged the public to support its political reform package that critics said was too conservative.

Pro-democracy legislators have refused to endorse the proposal and demand a road map that specifies when and how Hong Kong will become fully democratic, as promised under the territory’s mini-constitution.

Two massive pro-democracy marches helped trigger the territory’s first leadership change since the handover. Both protests – in 2003 and 2004 – drew half a million people demanding the right to pick their leader and all lawmakers.

When Hong Kong was a British colony, its rulers denied the people the freedom to elect their leaders and full legislature. The tradition has continued since the city returned to China in 1997 under a “one country, two systems” formula that promised to give Hong Kong a wide degree of autonomy.

Pro-democracy groups argue that Hong Kong deserves full democracy because it has a highly educated, sophisticated population living in one of Asia’s most stable and prosperous cities.

But Hong Kong’s leader, Donald Tsang, and Beijing insist that much needs to be done before the city becomes fully democratic. They claim Hong Kong’s political culture is still immature and extensive discussions need to be held about how democracy would work.

One of Sunday’s marchers, Palu Cheung, 42, disagrees. He took his four-year-old daughter with him to the rally.

“I want my daughter to know that I do this for her and for myself. I think we have the quality to select our own government. I’d like to show the Chinese government that we Hong Kongers can do democracy,” Cheung said.

Some analysts say that Beijing is stalling on democratic reforms because the Communist leadership fears that it would lose control of Hong Kong’s government – which under a democracy would care more about answering to the public.

The government’s political reform package calls for doubling the size of the 800-member committee that picks Hong Kong’s leader. The reforms also propose expanding the 60-member legislature. Half the members are directly elected, while the other half are selected by interest groups.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

China is on the way to becoming a democracy, because it's impossible for there to be no political freedom when economic freedom flourishes throughout the land. The Communist party is already bankrupt ideologically. It's only a matter of time before it reshapes itself to form the Chinese equivalent of the Japanese "Liberal Democrats"

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

great.. 250,000 people allowed to march peacefully.. no government brutality, no treacherous sonic devices used to disperse crowds, no police brutality to report.. no containtment into "free speech zones", no spooks following you back home threatening you.... Hong Kong should realize they have more democracy right now than many in the USA do..

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

Let us not be to quick to praise Chinese just yet. China is still one of the most brutally repressive states. Government still controls life with an iron fist such as you desis can't even imagine. Don't forget antiobl how viciously Chinese government suppresses your muslim uighor brothers in xinjing province with nary a peep from anyone on GS. Well China can oppress its muslims all it wants as long as it provides the weaponry to point at India.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

As my American friends say...it is cheaper to f*ck a prostitute in India than to buy a condom...
Lol....

Don't try to fuel fire between two great friends. Like i always say don't involve religion with friendship between pakistan and china. Expat, don't try this trick again. Evil you are and shall you die with evil.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

Get the hell out of here! I’ve asked quite a lot of Muslims in Xinjiang, besides their privileges for being minorities in China, they have everything needed for their religion. Every family has the Koran and a muslim man can marry up to 4 women, they speak some language more like Turkish. They get their education in both local language(neither pure Turkish nor Arabic) and Mandarin. All in all, they get everything they need for their religion plus extra privileges being in China. Next time when u try to BS, get some education.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

China is the best friend that pakiston has.

We value China's friendship and admire their economic progress

down with uncle tom antiobl, who is bringing his white master's agenda in here.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

Expatobserver, tell me one thing... why is it that quite a lot of other people hate indians? I had respect for you until you posted this. You see, that's the reason why people hate the indians (without capital "i") you all are two headed snake. Do u know what i mean? Now I see things more clearly. Is that the same reason why Pakistanis hate indians? Hmm... now i realize about the 1962 war with india. your prime minister nehru did exactly what you had done just now (fuel to fire). he played with different nations and set them to hate China. Now do you know why Pakistanis hate indians? Now do you realize why Chinese hate indians? I would like to say a lot of thrash here but that's not me. But i know some friends who loves to bash up people like you. Sorry but no sorry, you lost my respect for you expat.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

Hai.. kid.. chinese are the most loved people on earth or what..
U cannot do anything to miniscule thaiwan lying under ur belly..and do look at what japan did to u during the world war.
Hai..when did India say that they are loved. We know the whole world hate Indians. :).
Chinese was closer to USSR and then by some border problem then moved closer to USA. U r supplying north koreans with weapons and preach peace in the korean subcontinent. Was that not two headed snake that u r talking about.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

Yah dork, so no araba govt has taken Pakistan’s side in Kashmir issue. Your understanding of India/pakistan issues is so out to the left field, I don’t even know why you bother you pretend chinese but real Paki.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

Rightly said! far better than indians.

Can’t even spell Taiwan. Taiwan is an internal affair, indians keep out! look after your north east and kashmir. Japan was a hostile country. If you start praising Japan then i am pretty sure you must be retarded. But i would love to hear more about 1962.

Very true.

Do China and USSR still have problem? no! coz it’s Russia now. And yes they did have problems way back but it’s sorted out. But India will ever sort out their own issue with many countries. huh… talk about sorting out. My first advice is to sort out kashmir, liberate them, let them be independent or let Pakistan take care of them. Do that first before you start pointing your crooked fingers on China or Pakistan. in short india is a sick country. it has people with sick mentality like one here. Isn’t india a sick country? it has enemies all around it. want me to name some? Pakistan, China(still a foe), Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka among others.
Sooner or later the US will become hostile to india when it realizes that indians are sick in the head. true, now Russia is beginning to sense india’s true colours. So let’s just wait and watch.

About Korea, no China is no two headed snake. China DOES support korea but does not want a nuclear neighbour, she does not arm korea with a nuclear weapon as she is just next to it and it would be stupid to arm a neighbour with a nuclear weapon as it will affect her own interest. As far as North Korean nuclear program goes, it has nothing to do with China and all to do with the former soviet union. It also seems you don’t know jack about korea. So i would advice you to stop making a fool out of yourself by posting more nonsense.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

Why would anyone want to know what the arabs have to say about the kashmir issue. it’s between india and pakistan and it’s not for the arabs to decide.

Too bad if you don’t believe. it’s alright you can take me as a pakistani i don’t mind but just don’t even imagine i am indian.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

hai.. kid. U support most of the dictotorial regimes in the world. from north korea, burma and to Iran and Pakistan.U talk about liberating people. Does that not sound too odd.
So u seem to know lot. Mr. Genious. U elighten me why is China interested in North Korea. U ask a south korean and he will tell you that u fought with the norht koreans in the korean war. U didnt want a unified capitalist Korea. That was a threat to the Maoist.
U prop up the burmese military junta. Again as a buffer. U r repressing people in Tibet.
Taiwan being an internal problem of China.. then last i checked the chinese junta is only pointing their pencils at Taiwan and does not have even a token military presence there.
If its ur internal problem then Kashmir is an internal problem of India. And we know how to handle it. U keep out..Peace.

Re: Chinese Government may be in trouble: Thousands march in Hong Kong

Hai? What is this “Hai” by the way? Is it some “hai” of indian style kinda thing? The last time i had been to india is when one of the indians explained to me that the eunuchs in india use this term “hai”, and i hope you are not that. You also seem to spell the “genius” wrong. Actually i am no genius. but comparitive to you, yes i am an outstanding genius. see i am quoting you so you don’t cheat me.
OMG, man, what! are you ****tin’ me? If China don’t support the north Koreans then whom will it support? They are both communists, right? Why are you supporting the South Koreans? We have our rights to support whoever we choose and why do you need to tell us who to support? If india is to go to war with China, who will you support? China? You see, its the same principle. [edited]

Let tell you something dully, You do not have any rights to talk about tibet. I have not started talking about kashmir after you did about Taiwan. It’s not just your written english is bad, your perusal is worse than that. One last thing, please read all my post before you annotate again and see if you can pull something out of you ass to defend yourself.

China Police Kill As Many As 10 Protesters
BEIJING Dec 9, 2005 — Armed with guns and shields, hundreds of riot police sealed off a southern Chinese village after fatally shooting as many as 10 demonstrators and were searching for the protest organizers, villagers said Friday.

It was the deadliest known use of force by security forces against Chinese civilians since the killings around Tiananmen Square in 1989, and marked an escalation in the social protests that have convulsed the Chinese countryside.

During the demonstration Tuesday in Dongzhou, a village in southern Guangdong province, thousands of people gathered to protest the amount of money offered by the government as compensation for land to be used to construct a wind power plant.
Police started firing into the crowd, killing as many as 10 people, mostly men, and wounding up to 20, villagers reached by telephone said Friday. They said many remained missing.

Although security forces often use tear gas and truncheons to disperse demonstrators, it is extremely rare for them to fire into a crowd as the military did in putting down pro-democracy demonstrations around Tiananmen Square, when hundreds, if not thousands, were killed.

State media have not mentioned the incident and both provincial and local governments have repeatedly refused to comment. This is typical in China, where the ruling Communist Party controls the media and lower-level authorities are leery of releasing information without permission from the central government.

The number of protests in China’s vast, poverty-stricken countryside has risen in recent months as anger comes to a head over land seizures, corruption and a yawning wealth gap that experts say now threatens social stability. The government says about 70,000 such conflicts occurred last year, although many more are believed to go unreported.

The clashes also have become increasingly violent, with injuries sustained on both sides and huge amounts of damage done to property as protesters vent their frustration in face of indifferent or bullying authorities.

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL @ this PAKISTANI "jason_chiu888"

to make it realistic that some chinaman would have the kind of knowledge of desi countries, people, and culture that he does...he always conveniently has "some indian friends", some "indian muslim friends", some "pakistani friends", etc. who he as all "surveyed" for their opinions and views......and of course, he has extensively travelled India, like we all know ever chinese person has done, lol..... and most interestingly, he miraculously echoes pakistani muslim sentiment on every single political issue in the world. vah.
