PESHAWAR: Special Services Group commandos stormed a mud-house in Chagmali area on Thursday, 12 kilometres west of Jandola in South Waziristan Agency, to rescue the two Chinese engineers killing all five kidnappers, but one of the Chinese was also killed by abductors’ firing.
Army spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan told Daily Times that the 30-minute mid-day operation was the last resort after all efforts failed. “Army snipers first took out the lookouts and then commandos stormed the house when gunshots were heard,” a security official told Daily Times.
President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz conveyed their condolences to the Chinese leaders over the death of the Chinese engineer, vowing that masterminds behind this episode would be punished severely.
Prime Minister Aziz phoned the Prime Minister of State Council of the People’s Republic of China Wen Jiabao to convey his condolences to the Chinese engineer’s family.
China was distressed by the death of its citizen and condemned the kidnapping as a “terrorist act”, AFP quoted a statement as saying.
The dead Chinese surveyor was hit by bullets in his abdomen. “He was immediately airlifted to hospital but he died before treatment,” army sources told Daily Times.
A resident of Chagmali told Daily Times that the commandos wore tribal gear and they all had beards. “I saw used tear-gas shells lying outside the house. Before the operation, the kidnappers negotiated with the help of local tribesmen,” the resident said.
The two Chinese working on the Gomal Zam dam project were kidnapped on Saturday along with a police guard and driver. Former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Abdullah Mehsud claimed responsibility.
The police guard and driver were rescued unhurt, the army spokesman said. No commando was hurt. The kidnappers’ bodies, who were aged between 25 to 35 years, were taken to the Combined Military Hospital Peshawar for post-mortem and DNA test, intelligence sources said. All of them were bearded and two of them had Taliban-style long hair and the lower halves of most of the kidnappers’ bodies were mutilated, sources said.
Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao told reporters in Islamabad that the terrorists were not identified, but it was suspected that they were Uzbeks and Kandaharis. “It seems three of them were foreigners while the remaining two were local tribesmen,” intelligence officials said.
Mr Sherpao said the government used all political means to rescue the hostages. “The Jalalkhel tribe, a Mehsud sub-tribe, also tried to resolve the issue politically,” he said. The minister said the kidnappers had tied explosives to their bodies. He said Abdullah was not in his hideout at the time of the action. He said that the operation against terrorists would continue and expressed solidarity with the Chinese.
Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri phoned his Chinese counterpart Li Zhaoxing to inform him about the operation.
A Foreign Office statement said the Chinese foreign minister thanked Mr Kasuri for keeping him informed throughout the crisis. He said the Chinese government took note of Pakistani security forces’ effort to free the two hostages. Mr Kasuri assured his Chinese counterpart of protection to the Chinese in Pakistan.
