What’s the right time to give children cell phones? Or is there no right/wrong time?

My kids' friends have had their own cell phones since 3-4th grade which I find completely ridiculous! We live in a pretty affluent community, so all I would hear is how my poor deprived children are the ONLY ones they know at school and the masjid who don't have cell phones, and the sad part it was mostly true. I don't give a fig about peer pressure so their whining fell on deaf ears.

My eldest, who is 12 and in 7th grade, was finally given a cell phone (my used iphone 5 since I was upgrading to the 6) this past summer for his birthday, but only because he's on the tennis team this year, and he has to report to a different campus (the high school where the new tennis courts are located) for his first period tennis class, and then gets bussed back to his middle school for the rest of the day. Also, he's in band and has a lot of evening performances at the football games that I don't always go to, so we decided it was now time to give him a phone so that we could keep in touch with him and coordinate pick up/drop off etc.

I guess the answer of "when" will differ from family to family, but IMO, it should only be when necessary, such as with extra curricular activities.

Mine will get it when they get a driving license... maybe when they are 28 yr old.

I think the mobile shouldn't give to the children because they play games every time at cell and not complete their study ...

My opinion and situation is similar to khattichic's. My daughter is 12 and due to the fact that her school schedule differs from my work schedule and the time that she is home alone (we don't have a landline), we found it necessary to get her a phone last year. She started with an old iphone4 that we had lying around. We ended up moving her to an old model Samsung because the carrier we went with didn't support the iphone at the time.

She understands that I am to always have her password and very strict parameters

Khair......devices and kids is one of my buttons.....I can't stand people giving their kids such things to "behla'o" them as infants and toddlers and I've tried to keep my child away as much as possible.

Not so fast cowboy, let yr kids come in teens and u'll be doing the same. May be not willingly, but its today's "thing". So have it or go Amish :D

I know I know... right now if they protest, I threaten to up it by another 2 years.. they go till 34.. then stop.. not sure how long this innocence will last..

You don't **have **to do anything. It's up to each parent and family to decide when, if ever, is the right time according to their needs, values, budget etc.

The child can't go alone and get a cell phone and service now, can they? It has to be bought and paid for the parent. and if the parent doesn't want to, what can the child do lol.

Sometimes due to circumstances like muzna and you pointed out we have to. That's why I had gotten my first phone too at the age of 19.

I got my first cell phone at the age of 23, 2 months before I got married lol.

I got it when I was sixteen because that was when I started interning. The timetable will determine the need.
