Child Adoption and Torture

I just heard about this story on TV.
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/02/04/family.torture/index.html
It appears to me that the more kids you adopt from the adoption agency you get some sort of monthly stipend. People and not just this couple; there have been cases in other states as well have used this as a source of income. My question is this:
Are the child adoption agencies so stupid that they place upto 6 kids per household and then forget to check on the childerns well being. In this case even though the parent are to blame, I would like to see the worker in the agency and others associated with the agency that placed the kids there brought to justice.
These kids were never seen outside playing, had their toenails yanked by pliers, slept in closets and were chained to the walls, the teenagers weighed less than 60lbs. I am amazed and pissed off at the agency/ies. This is not the first time that this has happened and yet nothing is done. I mean we had 9/11 and we are trying to restructure CIA, creating department of homeland security, but we neglect a basic social issue, that was ingrained by the pilgrims that set foot on this Blessed land. I demand an explanation it better be good. I am going to call my congresswoman and have a chat even though it didn’t happen in NY but there have been cases and there needs to be a stringent law stating a limit for the welfare of the childern.

Re: Child Adoption and Torture

:(

Sadly, whatever goes on in lower middle class, and working class homes - no one cares about. And that's where you see so many problems - and we Pakistanis think we have social problems in our society. Whatever the cases are in Pakistan, I've seen way worse in lower classes of American society.

Its just so sad what these kids have to go through. Really sad.

Re: Child Adoption and Torture

^^ It just pissed me off. My 3 yr old kid weighs more than the 15 old in the story. The states in U.S need to seriously look at their social workers and social programs, and agencies like these need to be straightened out. If I yell at my kids I feel bad for a day or so and am rushing to buy them a toy, and here I see this I wantedto reach into the TV and personally give them 4:34.

Re: Child Adoption and Torture

Ohh dear...I can't stand hearing about child abuse...I have all these "save the wildlife" and "huga tree" and all that and on the other hand children are being tortured..I just hate it.

May God rebuke them.

Re: Child Adoption and Torture

Yet there are many other people who open their home and adopt without abusing the kids that are placed there. Unfortunately the only ones we hear about are the real bad ones.

1,400,000 (1.4-million or 87% of all adoptions) were domestic adoptions in 2000.

200,000 (or 13% of all adoptions) were of foreign-born children

1,600,000 - Total Number of Adoptions in the U.S. in 2000

 -U.S. Census, 2000

Also check here for more numbers:

For all the hundreds of thousands that go through fine, there are bad people that take advantage of the situation, as in anything. Doesn’t make it right or fair, but it also doesn’t mean the whole system is flawed.

Re: Child Adoption and Torture

My question is not on good vs bad. My question is on adoption agency and the limit of kids. Minah_pa 6 kids placed by an agency should have the homeland security light system flashing. There are no mechanisms in place to alert or change the system to check on a daily basis should 6 kids be placed.

Re: Child Adoption and Torture

You are absolutely right. There should be some checks in place.

However, there is a woman who works with me that cannot have kids. Her and her husband have adopted 3 so far. As far as I know, these are 3 of the luckiest kids living. The are always smiling and into everything.

I think that until there is a complaint however, you shouldn't barge into someone's life because they adopt a number of kids. I think that is where those kids fell through the cracks. There was no one looking out for them outside of the family (for example, church, other family members, doctors, etc.). Someone should have opened their mouths.

People are too afraid to speak up.

If someone did complain, then the agency that placed those kids needs to be reviewed and possibly to be dismantled. Allegations of abuse should always be taken seriously.

Re: Child Adoption and Torture

There are many problems facing the agencies who need to deal with these issues. The workers are underpaid and overworked - they are gov't workers and its our taxes that pay their salaries. Needless to say, its an overburdened beaurocracy where the workers are stressed out, overworked and underpaid. There are so very, very many children who need placement that the workers focus more on placing children who have nowhere to go than on children who are already placed. Becoming a foster-care parent is a tedious, almost endless task but once you get thru it, you get about $2k US per month per child and once you've been approved, its very easy to increase the number of children under your care. It is a very horrible thing, and I really havent got a good idea for a solution at this point....but that is the state of affairs, sad as it is. Once a child is placed, the child is just about forgotten as far as the state goes beacuse the case workers have so many more who are languishing in state hospitals or homeless shelters or stuck with abusive parents.
