Chicken for potluck tonite

SO I defrosted 2 full chicken cut up into small pieces. I have to make something for a potluck tonite.

I could make karhai chicken, chicken ka salan, that type of stuff…but I was thinking of something else. The menu is pure desi [post Eid]. Any suggestions? Recipes?

Re: Chicken for potluck tonite

Achari chicken would be yummy!

Or how about ginger chicken or chicken jalfrezi?

Re: Chicken for potluck tonite

How would you make that?

Re: Chicken for potluck tonite

Which one?

achari chicken and jalfrezi

Re: Chicken for potluck tonite

I have a potluck on Sunday where I, too, have to take some chicken dish. I was thinking of achaar chicken or chicken karahi, but it'll be nice to get some ideas from this thread.

My mum's not home right now. I'll post the recipe in a little bit once I get a hold of her.

Re: Chicken for potluck tonite

Okay - two ways to make - one is with the Shan masala paket or the other is from scratch. Assuming you don't have the Shan Masala here is my mom's recipe and I told her you have two whole chickens which she's approximating is 6 pounds.

  • 2 tablespoons dhania (sabit)
  • 1 tablespoon saunf
  • 1 tablespoon zeera (sabit)

Bhoon the above spices until toasted, then grind the spices.

  • 1 teaspoon haldi
  • 1 teaspoon mircha powder (this is very light mircha - add more to own taste)
  • 1 teaspoon kalonji/karayal
  • 3/4 teaspoon methi (bhoon it, but do not grind)
  • namak - approximately 2 teaspoon (or to own taste)
  • ginger and garlic paste
  • 1 cup yogurt (strain the water from the yogurt, as you do not want it to be too liquidy)

Add all of the spices to the yogurt and marinate chicken in yogurt masala for approximately 2 hours

  • 1 large or two medium onions, chopped

Saute until pink/translucent. Add the marinated chicken pieces to the pot and fry until it sizzles. Add the remaining spiced yogurt mixture to the pot and bhoon the chicken.

  • 1 1/2 pounds of tomatoes - sliced
  • 10-12 whole green chillies

When you are bhooning the chicken, while there is still some water left, add the tomatoes and bhoon some more. When the bhooning is almost complete add the whole chillies.

Complete and garnish with chopped cilantro.

Mum said if you like your food khatta, taste the chicken before taking it off the stove and if it is not khatta enough, you can add 1 teaspoon lemon juice.

Enjoy!
