what do u mommies do to ease chest congestion in infants? he’s only a 2 month old.. he’s had a rattling sound coming from his chest for the longest time, on and off, u can hear his troubled thick breathing…just tell he has mucus stuck there and i SO wanna take soem kinda sucker and pull it all out cuz it irritates him like hell.. his nose isnt runny and he doesnt have a fever.
ive taken him to his ped so many times, but its always the same answer, its nothing. yesterday and today he has thrown up nearly every feed and its so thick .. i was thinking since babies cant just cough phelgm up, throwing up is their way of getting rid of it.. but its still not cleared up.. and is it normal for them to keep getting mucus bulidup in their chests like mine does?
Theres a lovely infant bath product called Vapor bath, it has the eucalyptus scent and really helps loosen up the mucous. Steam and those vapor plug-ins help too.
when my boyz were infants and got sick, my sister (a pediatric RN) showed me how to do "cupping", its really just holding baby upright and burping him. The light pounding on their back loosens the mucous even more and helps them to cough it up and out.
its not available here in denmark unfortunately... i already do the cupping act and it does burp him but he cant cough up yet as he is too young. maybe i shoudl give him a nice steamy bath.. i put baby vapo rub on his chest everynight but its not doing anything to help him ... :(
Sorry to hear baby is not well. There is a lady here who's baby son was having same symptoms as your baby, the dr prescribed some NOSE DROPS that work by dripping down the nasal passage into the back of the throat into the chest, it loosens and clears up mucous. Please ask your ped to prescribe them for you, it really worked for this kid.
The vapor bath is a bit different, its a baby bath with the vapor smell, heres one by Johnsons. The one I used to get was a different brand, sorry I cant remember the name! But if you go to a pharmacy, take a look at all of the baby bath products and hopefully you’ll find it. Its really lovely, I’d give the baby a bath in that, wrap him in a warm towel and do the cupping right away.
If the congestion is from a post-nasal drip, those nose drops would be helpful too. Iff you want to try it before getting the prescription one, you can use just a mild warm saline solution, use a syringe and drip a couple of drops into his nose and then suction it out.
I love that Vapor bath, even for my kids at this age. The bottle says not to use it for kids under 6 months I think, but just dilute it enough. Bathe him right before bed time and he'll sleep real well.
The other thing is having a humidifier in the room. That is amazing and will help clear his congestion in a week.
but his nose isnt stuffy.. should i still be suctioning his nose after dripping saline solution in it??
like i said.. the vapo rub thing is just not available in this stupid country.. nothing with vapo is available for babies cuz its banned... sighz. i do have this menthol based rub that is approved but its not doing much .. maybe i should melt it in his bath water.. but i dont know if that will be the same or should even be tried :o
I got a humidifier, it's the Vicks one. My son had a LOT of congestion from when he was born cause of the delivery ... and so he has a lot of mucus in him. Close the door and keep the humidifier on all night. You can put a drop of vicks into the holder (there is a little cup holder thingy on top of the humidifier) but it can be sometimes too strong for the baby, and it will irritate the crap out of him .... BUT, it works.
My pediatrician as well as the pharmacist at the drug store told me NEVER to apply baby vicks/baby vaporub onto a baby. They sell them in the stores, but they strongly advise putting it on kids under the age of 2.
I also got him Triaminic nasal spray cause the mucus was not coming out of his nose. It worked. I also got him this other one that works well called HydraSense, which is are sea water nasal drops.
The humidifier was the best investment I made.
I got the nasal aspirator (suction thingy) and he hates it and I hate it. It's a lot easier to just spray some Triaminic in his nose, let him sneeze and it releases everything inside.
Another thing that I did was take him into the bathroom when someone was in the shower. Stripped him down, wrapped him in a towel and just sat on the counter and let him breath in the steam. It works and releases congestion.
if you cant get vicks, use olbas oil or karvol, put a few drops on a tissue near the baby, it works wonders, or mix it in a bowl of boiling water, or even add it to the steam bath.
Its funny how different countries have such different opinions for infants! In USA, they pulled infant decongestants off the shelves and no longer medicate infants for congestion. So now there is a vast selection of all types of vapor products - baths, rubs, plug-ins, vaporizers with vapor pools.
Other countries medicate but don't allow the vapor stuff.
Scary isnt it? Makes you wonder who's right - and whether they all might be wrong!!
Denmark doesnt medicate anyone unless they r dying. Hell the only med u can get is panadol. And for babies, they just let the little ones get over it themselves. U cant find jack on the market either since everything is banned. Its hell sometimes
