Why won’t the chat function work for me?
what happens exactly? some info is necessary to help u better here...
what browser r u using? Internet Explorer? Netscape? what version of the browser?
what OS are you using? Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP?
does the applet even load/appear when u click on the chat link?
someone here should be able to help u if u can describe the exact problem along with the info requested above :)

I’m using Internet Explorer 6.0.
Windows ME
When I click on “chat” I just get a little error symbol – with the red square, green circle, and blue triangle. 
sounds like a java error…most likely the applet is not initalizing on ur comp…
try running windows update, scan for new updates, download and install ALL critical updates, and from the windows section, select the ones that u want (esp if it mentions java or IE). after installing them, restart your computer. see if you can log into chat.
if that still doesn’t help, download and install Java 2 runtime environment from the sun java web-site here
hopefully that should fix this problem

I tried Windows Update before -- downloaded everything, restarted, no change.
I can't find the Java software you're referring to on the site. Maybe I'm missing something.

In the end it was this link that did it:
