Chasing Totals: Pakistan's Problems

Why is it that Pakistan cannot chase decent totals in either test or ODI games? Is it a mental issue or just a lack of planning? Everytime an opposng team bats first and gets 250 I can say with great certainty we will not win. This was not really a problem until 1996-1997 in my opinion. We used to do well chasing totals mainly because we had the best opening partnership in the world in Saeed Anwar and Aamir Sohail opening the innings and Inzamam Ul Haq batting at number 3. Since Sohail went and Inzy dropped down the order - and since we continue to play musical chairs with Saeed’s opening partner - we have suffered. I wonder if anyone can suggest what we can do to improve this major flaw in our game.

Pakistan certainly don't like to be under pressure, with poor domestic cricket, they don't get a chance to play competitive cricket which haunts them when they play international cricket.
when we had decent openers like amir and saeed, who used to take care of opening jobs, and now when they are gone, players like afridi don't get much about chasing runs.

Thank you, come again

well....Its not a problem with pakistan only .Actually this has become problem with most of the teams speacially if they r playing in subcontinent.primarily becouse of White ball which gets loose and heavy due to humidity and dew during evening.
And 2nd issue is the way oneday cricket is being played now a days.It has changed dramatically compare to way it was played 10 yrs back.

ofcourse issue that u pointed out is also very important .that is lack of quality batsman at the TOP. If you see records of team with great batsman ,they too suffered to chase big Targets in subcontinent.

Jiyo Aur Jeene Do!!!

I personally see it as a lack of dependable and experienced players.
Out of our top batting order who is a kallis?
One who will play with his head and slow it down, buidl a foundation and work from there?
Nobody, except for Youhana.
We don't have experienced openers, we need a solid 1 down - that is why i like Youhana as 1 down.
Inzi is undependable.
Completely and utterly worthless when he is doesn't have a full stomach.
When he has eaten well and had his lassi he kicks ass all the way.
He has played some excellent knocks, but you can't just depend on one guy.
Younis khan is good.
But we never stick with one player.
We always rotate.

Look at AUS they sucked until a couple of years ago.
But now they beat everybody.
Why?
They have had the same team for nearly 6 years now.
If the person is in a rut, they play him still as he is a valuable member of a team.

The Pakistan team is based on individuals and not on a team unit.
That has got to change.

forgot to add

They stick with their players, build experience, everybody carries teh same weight. They say if they don't do it, the next guy can do it, but no on his own.

You take pakistan.
If Saeed is knocking it all over the place, the rest get lazy.
And if saeed goes, it is time to collapse.
It was like this for a year.

Our top order needs to have experienced batsman who can guide the other weaker players.

Ours is not to reason why;
Ours is but to do and die

Yeah when Saeed and Aamir were togethern we didnt worry what it was we were chasing. Now if a team gets 250 we know we`re screwed and so do they which is why everyone decides to bat first against us if they win the toss.

Maybe Pakistan should consider having someone like Mohammad Wasim bat at number 3. The guy has a solid defence and he may be what we need to hold the top order together ifSaeed gets out early. Youhana should be at number 4 or 5 because we need him in the middle order. I still feel Nazir and Anwar should be opening instead of guys like Afridi.
