Charkha

What is this obsession with charkha? Why every other song includes charkha in it? like …

“ghoom charkha ghoom”
“charkhay de har har geray”
“kateya karoo tera roo kateya karoo”
“shawa charkha channan da”
“charkha nolakha”

:hmmm:

Re: Charkha

Sun charkhe di mithi mithi cook and jogi utar pahaRon aaya way charkhe di cook sun ke.. are classics :lajawab:

I think charkha is symbol of culture. The culture that disappeared after industrialization. Its not obsession, its nostalgia.

Re: Charkha

Strange. Never hear these except the first one.

Strange. Only heard the first one, not the second.

Dil charkha kare koon koon
Saanwal, Sohni di kadi tand na torein toon, toon, toon

Re: Charkha

you missed something if you didn’t listen 'Jogi utar pahaRn aaya:

Mussarrat Nazir/ Jogi Uttar Pahadon Aaya - Mehmil/ PtvLive - YouTube
Musarat Nazir ( PTV live) - “jogi utar paharon aya” - Punjabi folk - YouTube](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSg_pOLhSyk)

Re: Charkha

Thanks, I will listen to it as soon as I can.

The Azra Jahan song from 'Mehendi Waale Hath' that I posted above is beautiful to listen to.
Beautiful music with great recording quality in the first link.
The lyrics are also touching.
I want to transcribe the lyrics when I get the opportunity. :)

Re: Charkha

BTW why so much obsession with charkha?

Re: Charkha

Bekoz I love Gaandhi ji. :)

Re: Charkha

Re: Charkha

No. Never watched it.

Re: Charkha

Re: Charkha

charkha in sufi poetry is symbol of struggle for earning good deeds in this world for hereafter.
as bulleh shah said,
Kar ** Kattan** Wal dhayan Kurray
Nit mati dayndi ma dhiyan
kiun phirni ay eniv than dhiyan
Na sharam Haya Gawa dhiyan
Tu kadi ta samaj nadan kurray

bolded is چرخہ کاتنا

Re: Charkha

Ghoom charakara ghoom teri kattan wali jeewe

It is definitely appreciation of hard work in Sufi poetry.

Re: Charkha

yes, charkha katna, pani bharna etc. are metaphor of strugle and hard work

Well we have more metaphors of hard work too, mainly chakki peesna, but charkha and pani bharna has some romanticism to it.

Re: Charkha

kind of agreed but pani bharna in sufi poetry for some instances is different then "panghat pe jana" in urdu poetry.
for instance, if i could recall it
loye loye bhar lay kurreay je tun pani bharna
sham pae bin naam Mohammad rah jaandi tun darna

means abi waqt hai achay amaal karnay ka, late hogaye to Allah k samany paish hotay mushkil hogi

Re: Charkha

pani bharna is mushaqqat ka kaam.. as Kabir said: Bhala huwa meri matki toot gai, main to paniya bharan se chhoot gai

Re: Charkha

han, but poet is promoting kam-chori :D

Re: Charkha

exactly. same were my thoughts when I first heard this line

Re: Charkha

how?

“goye thapna” is mushakat ka kaam too :hehe: but why kathing charkha given more importance over other chores?

how? plzz enlighten me.
