Advertisements of almost all charity organizations, commercials for all charitable appeals show suffering children… especially the ads that show extremely weak, near dying children (usually from Africa) are very disturbing to me…
Do you consider this exploitation of children? Is it ethical? Do you think the ads indirectly send out a message of inferiority?
Or do you think its a good idea to use such disturbing images of children in charity ads because they can create sympathy in people’s hearts and actually get them to contribute to charity?
A thread on nihari (or indians & taalibans) reaches 2 pages in no time and such thought-provoking threads from sheynie and I are abandoned! yer all ghey!
Face it people like to talk more about mirch masala than thought provoking things. Anyway, what I think is that if there won't be any pictures of suffering children, then maybe those kinds of emotions won't be evoked in us which make the majority of us reach for our pockets and donate. I feel people think that, because they are children they deserve to be helped and given donations more than adults sometimes. Also the expression on a child's face and the purity is exploited to get people responding to such things. It's psychological, since we are so caring towards children around us, when other children suffer, we feel the need to do something about it.
The face of the Afghani girl which was on the cover of National GEO magazine I think, still haunts me sometimes. That expression is so strong and powerful, it sticks to the mind.
I just used that girl's example to illustrate my point of children and their expressions and evoking emotions in us!! That's just sad! Does he have Kwashiorkar?
I am saying that because I read this news about children in Africa and them suffering from Kwashiorkar and other nutrition related diseases. He does need help! :(
I don't think there's anything unethical about it. Or fraudulent. I mean, let's face it, most people won't give money if they aren't positively convinced that people are suffering. And what better way to convince them than pictures of starving children?
Anyways, if money obtained in this manned can save just ONE child, ethics can go to hell.
