Deposed judge of Supreme Court, Justice Khalil Ramday, has asked the ruling party not to push the legal fraternity to resort to using force for the establishment of independent judiciary and rule of law in the country.
Meanwhile emotionally-charged lawyers put a twist to the go Musharraf go slogans which they used to chant against former president Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf, and instead chanted slogans of go Zardari go on Tuesday.
Addressing lawyers at Shuhada-e-Punjab Hall on his last leg of the citys tour on Tuesday, he said that the lawyers were not struggling out of lust for power, but simply for the restoration of the pre-November 3 judiciary, with deposed Iftikhar Chaudhary being restored as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The lawyers movement has created awareness among the people with regard to leading the country towards prosperity and establishing the rule of law, he said.
Lauding the sacrifices given by the lawyers of Karachi, he said that without their active support, the lawyers movement could not have put up such a strong struggle. Their sacrifices would not go in vain, and the people would see a great revolution that would brush away dictatorial regimes that have been ruling the country for the last 60 years, he said.
Justice Ramday, who had headed the Supreme Court bench that gave the verdict for Chief Justice Iftikhars reinstatement in 2007, said that the movement was not being run for the employment of judges, but for the establishment of the rule of law and providing justice to common man. He recalled that he had refused to conduct Zardaris trial and had also not taken up the bail-before-arrest matter of Salman Taseer, adding that had he taken any step, they would have been easily put behind bars. He said that all steps taken after November 3, 2007 were illegal and unconstitutional, and asked the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government to reconsider its policy. He reminded the PPP of its previous stance when it supported the cause of lawyers, but had deviated from its stance after coming into power.
Karachi Bar Association (KBA) president, who also belongs to the PPP, said that that the rulers have deviated from the stance of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto for independent judiciary.
He alleged that the ruling party was toeing the policies of Musharraf regime.
Deposed judge of Sindh High Court (SHC) Justice Musheer Alam was also present at the occasion.
