**A man has been charged with attacking a British couple with a machete on the island of Tobago, police said.**The 25-year-old suspect, who has not been named, is due to appear in court on Monday accused of the attempted murder of Peter and Miriam Greene.
The expatriates, originally of Reading, Berkshire, were attacked last Saturday at their villa on the Caribbean island.
Mrs Greene, 59, has since had facial reconstructive surgery and her husband, 65, is in a medically induced coma.
Detectives said they had questioned several people before taking the suspect into custody.
During her surgery on Thursday, a steel plate was inserted into Mrs Greene’s jaw.
Travel warning
Doctors are waiting for Mr Greene’s condition to stabilise before considering surgery.
The couple, although originally from Reading, emigrated from Wellington, Somerset, two years ago and live in the town of Bacolet.
Following the attack the Foreign Office (FCO) updated its advice for travellers to Trinidad and Tobago telling them to be “aware that there are high levels of violent crime, especially shootings and kidnappings”.
Bacolet is about seven miles from where Swedish couple Anna Sundsval, 62, and Oke Olsoon, 73, were killed last year in a similar attack.
Authorities detained one person in that case but released him because of a lack of evidence.
Eight killings have been reported on Tobago so far this year, compared with four in 2008.
The larger, neighbouring island of Trinidad has reported 321 killings.
