They have changed it here in the UAE. But in our company we used to have Friday-Saturday before the official change anyway.

No. Private companies in the UAE are allowed to have their working week from Sunday to Thursday instead of Saturday to Wednesday and most of the multinationals make use of that possibility to gain an extra day with other regional offices of the same company. However government offices and local companies have to abide by the official weekend. Now that the official weekend in the UAE has been changed as well, that rule is not necessary anymore.
But in fact you will be surprised to hear that the same rule exists in Saudi Arabia. I know that, because the multinational company I work for here in Dubai also has three offices in Saudi Arabia, ie Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar. And all of these offices also operate on a Sunday to Thursday week.

most banks in the region and financial institutions already had friday-saturday as the weekend, even before this new weekend policy by the government....

Here in Qatar friday was only holiday when I was kid. Then they changed it to two holidays ; thursday-friday then few years back they made it friday-sat. Now they are planning to sat-sun.
