At an Eid salat, the imam who was leading it did say that we should try to make Eid a special occasion, especially for the children and family by giving them gifts, etc.

This is the first time I’ve heard of someone committing suicide for something like that.

I am surprised you heard it first time, it is norm in Pakistan, children ask for new cloths/gifts, parent unable to provide every year and then they kill themselves… this is norm, check the news papers, everyday there is a news or two about it…

These are all nice suggestions. If we generally have the attitude of looking at those who have less than what we have, then we will automatically be more grateful and appreciate what we have more.

There is more to it, if we tend to spend these days with the poor, share our joys with them, the society would become more tolerant… which have its own benefits

This also isn’t the right attitude IMO. Praying five times, knowing Quran/ahadees are all important aspects of our deen, in addition to helping the needy.

If one recite quran 10 times a day, never misses his salat but his neighbor is dying of hunger and poverty then i doubt that the reciting quran and praying would save the person on The Day… Quran and Islam is religion of practice and not theory… if one do not practice what he read/study then there is no point in reading…not that i am against it, all i am saying practice what you read…
