Chand-ra in Punjab and Chandi in Hindustan

What does chandra mean in Punjabi? Chand -warga?

Or its something negative like ferocious used for a Hindu diety (probably Kali Maa).

Re: Chand-ra in Punjab and Chandi in Hindustan

It is "pet name" for chand (moon). Similar phrase:Mithra (Mitha = sweet), blongara (blonger = kitten), shatoongra (shaitan = well, guess!), Jindri (Jind = life).

Re: Chand-ra in Punjab and Chandi in Hindustan

so its moon-like.. No, negative use involved like Chandi or Chand (Chandd Asoka).

Re: Chand-ra in Punjab and Chandi in Hindustan

chand warga literally means like the moon. Chandra has the same meaning. "sohna jaiya chand warga mukhra tera"

Re: Chand-ra in Punjab and Chandi in Hindustan

In Sindhi and Saraiki, Chandra got negative meaning (like someone who is of no use), but yesterday when I read it in Bano Qudsia's short story its use by charcters living in andron e shehr Lahore (Chandra Muqeem Ali her dafa Jaye e namaz aur Khajoor bhejta hai Kuwait se.. Kabhi toaster machine, jucier wagerah hi bhej de :p) and that too before Muqeem Ali's father, I thought it might got some positive meaning in Punjabi.

Chandra as it's spelt could also be a name. Like Chandramukhi. Again that just means "face like the moon"
