Champions Trophy - Group B: South Africa v Sri Lanka @ Centurion, Sep 22

The two pre-tournament favourites clash in the opener today (14:30 local, 12:30 GMT)

Recent form makes South Africa favourites

Form guide
(last five matches, most recent first)

South Africa - LWWWL
Forget their record in big tournaments, this is indeed South Africa’s best chance in a big tournament. They are the most settled team among the eight, Australia are not what they used to be - their 6-1 win in England notwithstanding - and others generally have more issues to settle than the hosts. They last played an international match back in April. Will they be rested or rusty?

(probable) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Roelof van der Merwe/Wayne Parnell, 9 Johan Botha, 10 Makhaya Ntini, 11 Dale Steyn.

Sri Lanka - LWWLL
A new-look team trying to bring together mavericks, team players and veterans makes for interesting following. Their No. 5 ranking in ODIs should not prompt other teams to let their guard down.

(probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Angelo Mathews, 8 Thilan Thushara, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Lasith Malinga.

Will be an interesting clash with SA just holding the edge. A good match in prospect.

Re: Champions Trophy - Group B: South Africa v Sri Lanka @ Centurion, Sep 22

SL 23/1 off 4.4 overs.

jayasuriya gone.

Re: Champions Trophy - Group B: South Africa v Sri Lanka @ Centurion, Sep 22

*62-1 .... they survived the early blow
*

Re: Champions Trophy - Group B: South Africa v Sri Lanka @ Centurion, Sep 22

116/1 off 17 overs.

SL going great guns.

258/3 (43.1 overs); RR: 5.97

Dilshan 106, Jayawardene 47*

7 RPO from hereon takes Sri Lanka to a commanding 310. They might even get more than that

So SA are looking at a stiff target well in excess of 300 - This will take some getting against Sri Lanka's quality spinners

Re: Champions Trophy - Group B: South Africa v Sri Lanka @ Centurion, Sep 22

SL going great so far. 258/3 in 43 overs.

The favorites might choke again, we’ll see. Go Sri Lanka. :k:

283/3 after 45 overs

15 runs coming off the 45th over!

325 looks gettable now

300/5 after 47 overs

Re: Champions Trophy - Group B: South Africa v Sri Lanka @ Centurion, Sep 22

I really thought Sri Lanka had no chance against South Africa but the way they have played, all credit to their batsmen.

Let's see if Mendis/Murli can put pressure on SAfrican batsmen. African spinners haven't done anything out of the ordinary.

314/6 after 49 overs

SA have pulled things back a bit in the last 2 overs

319/8 (50 overs)

Parnell was the most expensive of the South African bowlers conceding 79 runs (3 wkts) in his 10 overs

320 is the target for South Africa

Re: Champions Trophy - Group B: South Africa v Sri Lanka @ Centurion, Sep 22

S. Africa need 320 to win.

Re: Champions Trophy - Group B: South Africa v Sri Lanka @ Centurion, Sep 22

A difficult target but one which is not out of SA reach. Second half will be interesting.

SA not finding it easy to score runs

28/1 after 6 overs

RRR: 6.63

108/2 after 19 overs

RRR: 6.83

Sri Lanka appear to have the upperhand at the moment

but SA not out of the contest just yet

115/4 (21 overs)

SA losing Kallis and Duminy (bowled by a beauty from Mendis) in quick succession

Looks uphill for SA from here on, RRR: 7.06
