Alex own goal gives Arsenal the points](Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands.)

LONDON (Reuters) - English champions Arsenal needed an own goal to make a winning start to their Champions League campaign in a 1-0 Group E victory over PSV Eindhoven.

Arsenal had plenty of possession during the Tuesday game but could only find a way through PSV’s rearguard when Brazilian defender Alex turned a Thierry Henry cutback into his own net after 42 minutes.

Though they deserved the points, the difficulty in wresting them from Guus Hiddink’s well-organised side was a reminder that Arsenal have long under-performed in this competition.

Hiddink’s side denied Arsenal the time and space which they enjoy in the Premier League and could have snatched a draw in the closing stages.

Arsenal had Robert Pires playing in an unfamiliar role on the right in place of injured Fredrik Ljungberg, with Spanish international Jose Antonio Reyes playing on the left.

Against a disciplined opponent, Arsenal took nearly 15 minutes to warm up, before Henry put Reyes in for an angled effort and the France striker rifled a shot into the side netting.

Arsenal continued to press but lacked the killer final ball through a packed defence, though Pires should have done better than the scuffed volley from an Ashley Cole chip.

ARSENAL BREAKTHROUGH

Arsenal thought the breakthrough had come in the 37th minute when keeper Edwin Zoetebier punched out Henry’s rasping shot and Pires headed home – from an offside position.

Five minutes later Henry won back possession by the touchline, darted into the area and saw his cutback turned in by Alex, who was being pressured by the lurking Patrick Vieira.

There was little change after the re-start, with Arsenal looking for the security of a second goal but denied the opportunity in a game of few chances.

Henry had a free kick charged down, while PSV’s Park Ji-Sung and Van Bommel failed to keep attempts on target and Arsenal’s Brazilian midfielder Gilberto sent a header from a Dennis Bergkamp free kick wide of the post.

PSV’s best chance fell to substitute Jan Vennegor of Hesselink in the closing stages but he failed to make the most of a free shot from close range, while Park had an effort blocked in a final onslaught

Deadly Drogba scores twice as Chelsea pass French test](http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/040914/1/6igk.html)

Didier Drogba returned to haunt Paris Saint-Germain as Chelsea enhanced their Champions League credentials with a 3-0 win.

Former Marseille striker Drogba - signed for £24m as part of Jose Mourinho’s summer spending spree - went some way to justifying his price tag with two goals that left the PSG boo-boys stunned.

The visitors lost Eidur Gudjohnsen early on with a head injury that required eight stitches but were soon celebrating as skipper John Terry headed them in front following a goalkeeping blunder by Lionel Letizi.

PSG - still looking for their first win of the French domestic season - enjoyed plenty of possession but were unable to break down a resolute Chelsea rearguard, marshalled superbly by Terry and William Gallas.

Modeste M’Bami and Bartholomew Ogbeche both saw shots smothered by the impressive Petr Cech.

But the home side were made to pay in first-half stoppage time when Drogba followed up a Mateja Kezman effort to steer the ball into an empty net.

Chelsea looked in cruise control and the influential Joe Cole came close to scoring five minutes after the break but saw his 20-yard drive clawed around the post by Letizi.

Pedro Pauleta should have done better after he skipped past Gallas but again his final shot went begging.

Bernard Mendy had a shot blocked before Danijel Ljuboja then tried his luck with a free-kick but his effort lacked direction.

Drogba killed the contest on 76 minutes after Kezman when he sent a show-stopping free-kick around the wall and beyond the helpless Letizi.

Already it looks like most of the big teams will make it through the group stages with relative ease.

We'll just have to wait till the knock-out stages before we see some real action.

^ Not really. Group A, B and F have some really tough matches and by the looks of it, I am sure there will be some nail biting matches come day 6.

^ Group F - Barcelona and Milan have both already won away from home today, so that already looks over, unless the other teams can do somthing special away.

Group A - True one of the either Monaco, Liverpool or Deportivo will miss out, but well have to see if there is nail biting stuff.

Group B - Madrid will win easily, then its between Roma and Bayer.

Most groups will more or less be over by day 6.

Like I said the real excitement and nail biting stuff will have to wait.

hey,I had already started a thread on the Champion’s League :hoonh::smiley:

Arsenal has done nothing impressive with their play in European competition - PSV is a decent team but one that Arsenal is expected to beat - Relying on an own goal to win isn't impressive.

Inter Milan beating Werder Bremen - no surprises there - Werder Bremen don't have that much experience in European competitions - Inter have been top contenders for the CL for many years now.

Funny how a team from Ukraine can cause Milan so much trouble - none the less Milan still got 3 points and are still legit contenders for the CL.

Barcelona played pretty well - they did a survive a comeback charge from Celtic though.

Porto is not likely able to win the CL again - their main players were broken up and they lost Jose Murinho - a draw with Moscow is evident of that.

Very impressive win by Chelsea - they would probably do the best in the CL out of all the premiership teams.

Real and ManU both trailing.......

Juve 1-0 up due to a Nedved speciality

Van the Man scores twice in 5 minutes to equalize for ManU

Real trail by 3-0

Match between Roma and Dianamo Kiev is abondoned after Referee is attacked.

Real :nook: Horribly disappointing.

Nistelrooij showed truly world class spirit.

btw did u see Nedved’s goal? sheer class :k:

and Ruud: what need I say more…if you score over 110 goals in three seasons with ManU, ur among the very best in the world :k:

Yep that was a scorcher, Nedved is a master class. But an equal stunner , if not better was scored against Real today.

I am surprised by Real’s poor defensive show tonight. I thought with Samuels in defense they will be better defensively. They will still qualify from this group but they have to stop conceding easy goals.

The incident with referee Frisk in match between Roma and Dianamo kiev was ridiculous though

OK forget everything I said earlier about Madrid winning their group easily. :o

All the other big teams should be alright.

Positive highlight of yesterday:

Bayer Leverkusen doing “pittai” of Real.

Negative highlight:

The Fans of Roma. :nook:

Real were shockingly bad yesterday :nook:

am glad to see Del Piero finding back some of his form

The way Madrid was playing was the embarrassing part of the game - not the loss - Of course teams can lose games but it's always a matter of how they play - except for 2 or 3 situations Real looked lost - if they keep relying on brilliant moments of their key players they will be lost on days like this - You can't rely on single players in soccer - it's a team sport - Nothing against Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo, Raul or Beckham(can't believe i am giving pass on Beck) - but if they don't grow together as a team - Real might face another season without winning a title - They really haven't looked good AT ALL since the beginning of la liga last season.

Some crucial matches tonight including Roma-Real one. Both team cannot get any worse right now or can they? ManU face Turkish side Faber and hope to unveil supposedly best strike partnership (Ruud-Rooney) in Europe.

Tomorrow Chelsea face Porto and an emotional match for Maurinho having led Porto to the title last time around.

Real concedes two goals inside first twenty minutes to Roma. Can their defence get any worse?? Raul keeps wasting golden oppurtunities to score and insists on playing.

and Rooney scores twice on his debut.

Raul and Real strike back and are leading 4-2

cud this be the turn-around?

^ I would like to hope so.

Real staged a marvellous come back after conceding two early goals and have beaten Roma 4-2 after three second half goals. Raul scored twice with Roberto Carlos scoring a scorcher. Their defensive frailities aside, Real found their goal scoring touch in this match. Four goals in five games this season and four games alone in this match. Can they kick start their season after this win, remains to be seen. Roma is virtually out of the reckoning though.

A hattrick for outstanding Rooney on his debut for ManU as they beat Fabernache 6-2. You cannot script a better debut than that. You gotta hand it to Rooney, this guy can score goals consistently. He will grab all the headlines in newspapers and deservingly so.
