Challenges vs Opportunities for Average College Students

It seem the opportunities were never this many for someone who is used to being among the top of their class. But think about the average student. Do you feel the challenges such as high tuition rates, competitive admissions, tougher than ever exams, etc. surpass the opportunities afforded by modern day opportunities such as having internet, better transport, more qualified teachers, etc.?

I often feel average students of today are far more talented and hardworking compared to average students of the past, yet far less successful.

What are your views on this?

Picked up BMY two days ago at 52 week low. it is down 2.5 pct. might pick up some more if it goes down another 8 pct.

That’s quite a broad, ever encompassing statement, what’s the basis for this, why do you feel today’s young generation is lagging behind in career success, any quantified figures, studies??

On the other hand, today’s world build around internet based various rich social media platforms like FB, Insta, Linkedin provide far greater opportunities for success to younger generation, specially those with entrepreneurial streak and it would greatly compliment their academic knowledge. Tools we’ve available today deploy wealth of information of all sorts to give you most upto date trends, methods and resources to turn to. This was something not available to generations of yesteryear.

@Raamis - Your nick reminds me of someone very special !

Certainly that statement is quite broad and that?s why little depressing too. I don?t have any references to back that up except for my own observations. I could very well be wrong, I hope I am wrong and these average students of today actually have a better shot than students 10 years ago and earlier.

As far as internet/social media is concerned, it is available to larger number of people so it has increased competition. Let?s say a student submits a paper today, it will be just expected that there won?t be spelling mistakes since so many have access to word processors. Similarly so many other things are just expected from students today and if those expectations are not met, there are penalties. Also the exams set by teachers today seem far tougher because of these heightened expectations.

Great topic! :k: Unfortunately its too broad to cover in few sentences.

So first of all if you compare different generations you’ll see that higher degrees are valued lesser and lesser gradually. Before our generation masters was a big deal. For us, it was ok its good but certifications are needed too to supplement. And now its double masters or PhDs etc. Why? Because the job market has grown so demanding and saturated that lesser degrees are not so much acceptable. That leaves a current college student in a big dilemma as he/she has insurmountable challenges. Now even a average student has to push themselves very hard to go an extra mile and have some solid achievements under the belt.

Also being too much tech sources like internet has done one thing good i.e. it has opened up more opportunities but at the same time it has done some damage. i.e. its easy to get a quick background check of any candidate as to how they have done in their academics, score-wise as well as discipline. And also since its equally open for everyone, the competition has gone sky-rocketed so one miss and you lose the chance. Thats how it is now.

As for the question, yes students these days are more hardworking cuz they have no other choice.
Talent has always been the same but now you see they are more carved up due to the aids provided by technology ofcourse.

I remember some average students who tried really hard, got so stressed out and then dropped out of their programs. Its like winner takes it all but the average students have super tough time.

I knew a TA tasked with setting 1st midterm for an XYZ101 course. Course instructor surprised him by asking him to set really tough paper so all weak students would just drop the course. And since there were some top class students in the course, the average students who stayed around really suffered.
