Anyone knows difference between these terminologies used to denote administrative units in rural Punjab?
I have heard of Chak and Mauza, mostlly chak... chak number 52B :@: dont know the rest though...
Re: Chak,Mauza, Sakna, Anga
If i am not wrong, mouza comprises of few chaks. This term is again used mainly in saraiki areas.
chak and mouzas are there in rural Punjab too...
Re: Chak,Mauza, Sakna, Anga
It seems to be an administrative division:
District → Tehsil/Taluka → Mouza/Deh → Chak/Village
Tehsildar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
n Pakistan a Tehsildar is responsible for obtaining revenue from a Tehsil, or Taluka (as called in Sindh), which is then used by the district government. A Tehsil is a sub-division of a District and will have multiple smaller administrative units called ‘Mouza’ or ‘Deh’. Typically a district will contain multiple Tehsils.
He is a gazetted officer (class I), a Tehsildar enjoys a fair amount of authority and respect, especially in the rural and urban areas and is also tasked to forecast the expected seasonal crop yields and classify and map the landuse in the respective Tehsil.
A Tehsildar is also called a ‘Mukhtiarkar’ in Sindh, and is also known as a mukulan.

I think they call Chak ‘Tappa’ in Sindhi. Heard Mukhtiyarkar but not mukulan

Re: Chak,Mauza, Sakna, Anga

Re: Chak,Mauza, Sakna, Anga
All rural divisions/subdivisions have something or the other to do with water distribution. Mauza is a village....and further on, villages are defined by their size (mauza kalaan = big village.....mauza khurd = small village). The big/small demarcation again is based on water resources.
I feel that the science/logic behind village terminologies far exceeds those used in urban areas.
