Why do you think celebrities choose whatever they wear at high profile weddings? Some times the outfits are 
and sometimes the bags drown the overall look.
I think they are in dire need of stylists in real lives as well.

Not everyone is equipped with a good fashion sense. To them, they look good.

I think it's because the entertainment field is very competitive about superficial things such as fashion/looks.
And maybe the actresses....especially.....try to dress in a way that makes them STAND OUT. Perhaps they might even think that some directors/producers might also attend the event and if they make a strong impression (through their looks)....they might land a role in a movie.
Or perhaps they know that the high profile event will be all over the media and it's a great way for them to draw some attention to themselves.
I think the bottom like is attention and standing out.....and in meeting this goal....they may not see how unflattering they look.
