Re: Celebrating Halloween????

grow up lol
Halloween started as a festival for honouring and praying for the dead, in north western Europe and what is now the UK, and in its original form was similar to how shab-e baraa'at is celebrated today amongst muslims.

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

How shab-e baraat is similar to Halloween???

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

Please read my post again... I did not say Halloween is similar to shab-e baraa'at.

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

I heard some Churches even say not to celebrate halloween. If it was a night of praying then they should not say that.
Here our local mosque is telling everyone not to celebrate Halloween. The scholar said it is like celebrating Satan's eid (I am not sure what to think of this statement) but I would like to know any hadeeth or Quranic reference. I was of course not in that kataba but I heard that scholar was giving some reference of Quran and Hadeeth when telling not to celebrate halloween.
So if anyone knows anything please post.

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

^ In that case, read post # 2 and 3.

Re: Celebrating Halloween???

:salam:

Before asking about references for its explicit prohibition, can you tell what is there in it to celebrate first of all?

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

So...can we give candy to kids who come knocking or not?

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

Personally, I don't see a problem with that.

Re: Celebrating Halloween???

maybe you don’t see anything to celebrate there but some of us do. Like I would love to give out candies to kid if there is nothing in Islam that prohibits us from celebrating halloween but if there is then I will not do it

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

personally I don't see any problem with it either, but after hearing that our local mosque is telling people not to celebrate I want to know why?? and if there is any reference to Quran or hadeeth

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

Please read the email forward I received and then my response below:

Halloween/All Hallows Eve/All Saints Day
This ancient festival originated far from the North
American continent, centuries before the first Europeans set foot here.
The ancient Druids of what is now Great Britain placed great importance on the passing of each season. They held "Fire Festivals" which were celebrated for three days straight.
One of these festivals was called Samhaim (sha-von) and took place on Oct 31.
During this festival. the Druids believed that the boundaries between our world and the world of the dead were weakened, allowing spirits of the recently dead to cross over and possess the living.
They would dress up in bizarre costumes and parade through their villages causing destruction in order to scare away any recently departed souls who might be prowling around, looking for bodies to inhabit. Also, they would sacrifice animals and make other offerings to the Druidic deities.
Because everyone was in bizarre costumes, the villagers had no way of knowing who was actually alive and who was a recently departed soul.** They would leave a bowl of fruit and nuts on their doorstep as an offering to any recently departed souls that might come around to reclaim the home they lived in while alive.**
This is the origin of the modern day custom of "trick or treat"
This yearly festival was later adopted by the Roman invaders, who helped to
propagate it throughout the Roman Empire.

==================================

There is lot more history to this tradition. But it started as FWD mentions - it was last Religiously adopted by Christians. Current transformation can be summed as "a social event" (not exactly religious). Join or refrain is your personal choice. Not a religious issue.

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

In Islam we do not imitate foreign customs especially ones that have some creed attached to it. There is not explicit reference from Quran or Sunnah related to Halloween since it did not exist back then but analogies of where prohibitions existed to prevent us from imitating non-muslims especially in there religious celebrations. It may seem pretty harmless but we should not judge things by our desired goal or outcome but by its realistic consequences. In other words give it more than just a superficial though.

Your desired goal is to please children by showing your generosity, indeed generosity is a characteristic cherished in Islam. No doubt in that. But look at it from a different angle, would it not be better if you used your generosity to actually help those in need, use those resources where they make a more genuine difference. Another aspect, which I would agree with you is that it helps you socially fit in with a vast majority who probably themselves are not doing it out of any conviction but for the fun and enjoyment it brings to children. Its a matter of priority and intention and what you want your kids to learn. For instance, we should try to build a two way road here. If you are participating in something from their culture then also share something from yours. Don't enslave yourself with the though that its you who only needs to fit into their social culture but they should also know wat you are about. For example, I am plannig to actually Inshallah! share iftar items in my neighborhood next Ramadan so they also know what we do in our muslim culture and also intrigue them about Ramadan. It will also teach my kids not be shy about their faith and learn to share it in a good way, in a commonly acceptable way in a society in which we are in minority.

Here in USA at least for those who live in Housing communities usually have a certain day there community goes around trick o treating. What I do is plan with my other muslims friends to be in their house when we have trick or treating in our neighborhood and not theirs, this allows us to avoid the inconvenience of our children feeling left out. And they come to our house when it is the same in their community. A nice thing would be that our local masjids plan counter activities in the masjids on days like these or occasions like these so as to help muslims divert their kids attention from such activities.

I don't think our lack of participation bothers the society so much as it does our own children. What you should prepare is how you will handle your own children when they are tempted to desire and cannot understand why they are being stopped from something as harmless as collecting candy.

Anyway, IMO, I don't see this as such a faith shattering activity at least when the kids are very young, they are too young to understand the difference between fun and faith, we in our cultures do stuff that is much more contrary to our faith.

Re: Celebrating Halloween???

:smack Halloween iz more like begging :smack: wen people go down houses asking for money or sweetz ect…

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

Peace All

From another angle ...

In Islam we have a rich enough culture already ... On Eid we give gifts to children of members of our household broader family and friends ...

However, going from door to door to people we don't know is dangerous. How can kids get things from people they don't know? Would they eat things from strangers? Well that is perzactly what trick or treat encourages.

Islam has the gift giving aspect of Trick or Treat but not the 'danger' in sight.

Take care of your kids don't let them out on Halloween.

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

who cares....

don't know why you people are so boring as to not celebrate Halloween

Its fun dressing up, giving candy to kids and having a good time....

Get a life

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

Its a harmless little holiday... I dont know why Muslims have to insist on disecting every little thing in the world.

Re: Celebrating Halloween????

Peace PaKpatriot1

1) Dressed as devils humanity's open enemy
2) Begging for treats (Muslims are taught to give not take)
3) Being threatened by kids if no treat is given then ransack their property
4) Night time outside can be cold and can get lost or taken
5) Loss of sleep time and routine
6) Too much candy bad for teeth
7) Is it haram or halal candy?
8) Are the people giving candy safe?
9) Kids fighting with other kids for their candy
10) Adult stalkers dressed as kids for candy but really want to see vunerable people
11) Commercialisation of Halloween ... spending money on futile things, doesn't teach children any moral values.

The origins of Halloween are not good either. A harmless holiday it is not!
