celebrating birthdays

do you think celebrating birthdays is haram, disliked or ok?

Re: celebrating birthdays

I don't really know the answer but I guess most scholars avoid "celebrating" birthdays. In our home, we do it within the family, not for any particular reason but because that's how we've always done it.

Re: celebrating birthdays

It depends who you ask , some will say it is a bidaat , some will tell you it is sunnat , some will tell you that since you are following the tradition of non Muslims so on the day of Qiamat you will be among them.
So follow your heart. I have been celebrating my kids birthday's when they were very young , now they do not want to celebrate it.
Now about the Sunnat part.
There is a report of a Sunnat , I do not have a link to that one at the moment but you can find it. If the need be I will dig it out. It says that Prophet Mohammed(SAW) used to fast on Monday's when asked why he does so , he replied do you not know I was born on that day.
That being said , the rebuttal from someone will be dude look at how he(saw) celebrated it , there was no cake , no candles , no baloons.
Now if you have an argument against it then you can celebrate it.

Re: celebrating birthdays

^so did Allah's Rasoul (sal-Allahu 'alayhi wa salam) fast to celebrate his birthday every Monday? Why did he fast on Thursdays and put so much emphasize on fasting on Thursdays? What about the other times when he (sal-allahu 'alayhi wa salam) fasted?

Re: celebrating birthdays

it all depends how u celebrate birthdays, anniversaries n bla bla.

Re: celebrating birthdays

same here, we dont really celebrate it, just within the family, bake a cake and give gifts to the kids. the reason is that my younger sisters says that their classmates celebrate why cannot we and so on. so we just do it to make them happy.
But its kind of wierd that ppl celebrate that they have 1 yr less remain to live :S

Fiqh-us-Sunnah
by Sayyid Saabiq
Volume 3: Voluntary Fasts, Page 128:

Fasting Mondays and Thursdays
Abu Hurairah reported that the most the Prophet would fast would be Monday and Thursday. He was asked about that and he said: "The actions are presented on every Monday and Thursday. Allah forgives every Muslim or every believer, except for those who are boycotting each other. He says [about them]: 'Leave them.' " This is related by Ahmad with a sahih chain. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet, when asked about fasting on Monday, said: "That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I received revelations."

Re: celebrating birthdays

OK should one celebrate on islamic calender or currently popular calender date?

Every week of the day fast and celebration or every year?

Should fasting be done or eat a lot that day like so many of us do.

I think its just a way to celebrate something and nothing wrong with it if not out of control and some charity is given to needy.

I say just be happy.

People celebrate urs (Oors or whatever you may call it ) of religious people and eat Zarda and Biryani and have fun, Qawwali, and Dhamma Chowkri.
A religious peron (made up or real) having celebration of his birth or death right on his grave.

Re: celebrating birthdays

If you are not doing anything which Shariah Forbids then its OK to do it.

great post! jazakumahllah

Salam..

B.days celebration according 2 existing fashion... This is objectionable in Islam.
If U celebrate ur b.day by offering prayer 2 pay thanxx 2 ALLAH that He made u
ppl with full swing or by giving some charity in the way of ALLAH in the capacity of thanx 2 ALLAH ALMIGHTY. It would not be objectionable...so, let me tell u 1 thing crystal clear that every act what may be, is celebrated acording 2 the rules n regulations formulated by ALLAH and exercised by ALLAH's Rasoul (sal-Allahu 'alayhi wa salam) would a virtue rather than sin.

PRaYeRsss...

Re: celebrating birthdays

We always start any celebrations with a fateha and shukrana prayer to Allah. and birthdays r usually just a small family affair :)

Re: celebrating birthdays

Not everyone celebrates birthdays.

At least in my family - like my grandparents and ancestors - did not celebrate MOSTLY because they DID not even keep track of when a baby was born!!! A laughing matter!

Our generation celebrate birthday as a private small family affair - not a lavish one. Just to remember and Thank ALLAH for his creations and that we are happy to have each other as a family! We definitely have cake from the French Baker - oh they make it the best! Yum!
