I've had two cats as a kid after begging and begging my parents. The first one we had to give away when it became too cold for it to stay outside in the shed. We continued to visit it until it 'ran away'. Then the second cat went into heat when it was a year old and actually ran away. My parents hated having them in the house. Now that I'm older I view animals as somewhat dirty too. I don't think I want furballs and urine in my house.
