the girls in this video are wearing mendhi friendly ghararas that are sparkly and suited for a party event but if you watch films like gadar you will see amisha patels wears some simple ghararas, some old films or period films like mughal-e-azam, pakeezah, umrao jaan will have examples of some simpler ones
ghararas used to be worn on a daily basis in regions like Lucknow, India. My father's mumani wore them regularly until she passed away a few years ago.
I LOVE ghararas and would gladly wear them all the time, but just don't have the opportunity to wear the casual ones. I think churidaars or shalwars or ajars would be more practical for you.
***That’s so true! Many of the older ladies still wear ghararas as part of their daily wear and feel comfortable because they have worn it for ages and just don’t want to give up.
The new designers also put up collection where lawns are styled as casual ghararas for example this Wardah Saleem outfit from her 2011 lawn collection.
My dadi (Lahori) used to wear them all the time growing up and even after getting married. Then she married my sophisticated Dada and started wearing maxi dresses, saris and trouser-shalwars. :p
I miss the regal look of ghararas. I'd wear one all the time.
What's the difference between gharara, lengha and sharara? Confused...
Both lenghas and shararas are skirts. Ghararas are actually two-legged, with a lot of fabric to give the appearance of a skirt. They have a "gote" at the knee traditionally or lower. Dhaka pajamas are also two legged, but they're more like really wide-legged pants, without a joint.
Thanks sahar. So if there both skirts what's the difference between a lengha and a sharara? :-/
no idea. they may be the same thing. or how it's cut/stitched is different.
