Casual attire = Casual attitude?

Up until now, every company I have worked for has been business or business casual attire. This new company is all casual…like I can show up to work in my PJs and its okay! This is because we dont have any face-to-face interaction with our clients…its all over the phone.

My concern is, will wearing PJs to work relax me to the point where Im just not as motivated?

Do your clothes really affect your attitude?

Is dressing for success a myth?

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

okay would you seriously want to wear your PJ's to work?! **
**
i don't think i could take you seriosuly if i walked in and saw you wearing your pj's! lol! ;)

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

Dressing for success is something that you may not be told to your face at work...that you need to dress better.

But the way people perceive you relies heavily on that first impression they get.

You look shabby, they're going to think your quality of work is shabby. It might be something that they are subconsciously perceiving.

*I think wearing certain clothing does effect your mood and motivation. When your going to a wedding u dress up in the wedding mood. When your tired you go to sleep in comfy clothes. When your going to work u want to dress for work. For example when im in my pj'z im chilling! When i'm in my jean etc it motivates me to go out and do something. *

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

Dress comfortably but not the point where you stand out (pjs..)

Look at the successful companies in the past decade, they all have a casual dress code, well most do and they are thriving even in this economy. There's no such thing as "dress for success" ... it's what makes you comfortable, will help you succeed.

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

Even that casual dress code is hot stuff. It's not the I-bought-this-crap-for-10-bucks-at-walmart.

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

I think wearing PJs in public is not appropriate unless it's 'Pajama Day' at school. I can understand the temptation to dress down but I would set certain boundaries for myself and not cross them. I've been in a similar situation before as I used to work in the Financial Disctrict of Toronto. Every day I'd feel the need to be dressed-up, coordinated, and put together. Then I was moved to another office situated between a highschool and small manufacruring companies. I had no motivation to dress-up becasue everyone around me was in jeans or just very casual. In the beginning it was relaxing because I was sick of wearing suit jackets, make-up, and high heels. But after a while I started to feel lazy and felt no excitement when I looked at myself in the mirror. Now I've moved to an 'up-town' area and LOVE it. Being put-together makes you feel good about yourself and this reflects your personality in general. From now on, doesnt matter what envoironment I'm in, I'll always make sure that I look like I;ve made an effort to get ready for work.
If your work environment doesn't require you to be formal, you should feel relieved but don't let your attitude slip to the point thet you lose your sense of style. Chinos, layered tops, cute cardigans, bangle bracelets, and colourful flats all reflect a very casual yet trendy look. Not to mention that they are comfortable too!

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

I used to think I would teach successful lessons if I were wearing 'teacher' clothes. I used to have a whole separate 'teacher shoes' collection.

We dont have a specific dress code, but denim is a no no.

When I am teaching P.E I do dress in my P.E kit. The kids need to know that they must wear the appropriate clothes for physical exercise.

I used to feel like such a tramp wearing my joggers and t shirt, but now I look forward to P.E days!!!

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

what happened to taking pride in ur appearance.

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

I'll probably not get anything around the house done if I dont get out of my PJs on the weekends. PJs make me lethargic.
Casual dressing at work is okay as long as its not PJs, you can wear jeans ... we have casual Fridays and thats when we get to wear jeans :D

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

there's a difference between dressing casually and dressing like a slob. i've seen people in formal business attire that could do with pressing their clothes properly and putting a brush through their hair.

the places i've worked in london that don't have a dress code, people might be dressed casually but it's still with style. for the most part you can tell they have put a fair amount of effort into what they're wearing and how they look.

i prefer being fairly casual so i can just get on with my work. i feel constricted in formal business attire and if i can't relax i can't concentrate properly.

also, it's just a personal thing but when people try to hard to look perfect and shiny my first impression is that they care more and spend more time on their appearance than their work. and usually yea, they do keep taking bathroom breaks to fix hair or reapply makeup.

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

**i'm a horticulturist and that involves goinf to seminar and conferences on one extreme and getting down to ur knees on the farms in summer months or working in the labs or greenhouses or even cold storages. so, if i am NOT wearing overalls in a cold storage i don't feel comfy at all and i'm sluggish...in the lab, if i am not wearing my lab coat, i feel like i'm not upto the job.

yes, what u r wearing at work affects ur work qualitatively and quantitatively :)**

I feel better about myself when I'm dressed nicely. KWIM? You know when you're wearing an outfit (professional or formal) that looks good on you, you feel a spring in your step. You're more likely to feel confident and positive. So, I think it can make a difference. But I don't think it's a definite way of remaining positive at work all the time. You could get into a conflict at work and that could bring you down.

Keep in mind that you'd be seen in pajamas when you leave work. You might have to make a stop at the grocery store or elsewhere. And if your comfortable with that, then go ahead.

If my work place was lax about attire, I'd wear something casual like jeans and a tee shirt. But that's as far as I'd take it. I think that wearing my PJ's to work would make me feel sleepy.

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

Yea I agree , a little bit of formal dressing is good . You feel more active and efficient . Though I hardly wear suits or even dress pants , but I make sure my shorts/jeans and t-shirt is all ironed up :stuck_out_tongue:

(Ok I am lying , I don’t even iron them :smack:)

I think all IT people will agree with me that best programming is done either in shorts or dhooti . :@:

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

Yes, the dress does affect the attitude. Formal dress makes me feel like a cog in a machine.

I always remember those who made an effort in the way they dressed

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

Dress affects the attitude alot...if u wear sum formal dress,u will act formal...but if u dress up casually,u will act casual...Moreover, gud dressing gives u alot of confidence tooo...

Re: Casual attire = Casual attitude?

oh this made me miss my previous consultancy job, where i hardly have to wear a suit, and some people use to come to office in shorts. Since i joined the tech world of banking, Now I dont get a chance to wear jeans any day of the week, for now casual means, not wearing tie :(

Personally I think, dress has very little towards your work ethics or actual work specially in IT. sometime it does help to alleviate your mood.
