You have Syeds, Mughals and Rajputs who are clearly associated with lineage. Then you have the Gujjars, Moochis,Marasis, Halwai.... which are associated with proffesions. Its a huge mess and clearly very poorly adopted from the Hindu culture. So If you are of mughal ancestry owning a sweet shop: you apparently belong to two castes. FAIL.
Being a Syed myself, I thought I should shed a bit of light on the issues associated with us. First of all, we are not special, unless we are Allah-fearing, and compassionate. And anyone from another caste/lineage/occupation possess such traits; we have no superiority to them. The so-called caste system is meant to be a form of identity but whoever tried to bring it into Pakistan royally failed in doing so and instead just created hatred.
We all have first names, last names and we are identified by our proffessions and these things all are apart of us. Punjabi, sindhi or pattan, identifes one with a particular culture and the associated food, dress and language. Similarly, Syeds have their own traditions as many other casts might. Its nothing to be offended by. However placing them in an order of status is best left for Allah to judge. Cause I doubt a Syed sharabi will hold precedence over a pious Marasi.
Generally Syeds will want to marry within their own "caste" but thats like saying I want to marry within the family. I know in our family we are particular about this but it is not haram to marry anyone else, and if there is someone who is a better person belonging to another caste the quraan will support that union. Syed Shias (disclaimer: I'm talking about the general belief, not all) will not marry their daughters to a non-syed. "'Syedzadi' cannot get married to an ummati"- refered to the widows of the prophet, not his progeny. The prophet was asked weather he wanted his parents to be blessed or his Ummah, if he didnt discriminate between his family and all muslims who are we to?
** Advice to the brother whose sister is having a fling with a non-Syed: For the sake of the Syed name being tainted marry your sister to him.
1. What good is this vanity, Syed decendant having a fling?
2. If Non-Syeds are considered kuffar why would the muslim nation bother with dawah?

Gujjar is not a profession :s
about the syedzadi (look bold) .. can you shed some light on that, because I have been wondering about this for some time now :)
This thing is more common amongst the mirpuri pakistanis. Some castes like raaje and behns are only found in mirpur. These mirpuris even in UK vote for candidates from their baradaris in local elections.
