Caste predjudice

Why are we still predjudice against caste in Pakistan?

It is not limited here - families that moved to other countries continue to segregate and shun castes.

An example Mr Chauderys daughter went ahead and married a - Raja (a caste above her I think)

And Mr Chaudery - doesn’t like it - he doesn’t like his daughters choice of partner because he is not from the Chaudery baraderi.

What I don’t understand is why there is social segregation and the so called untouchables - which all date back from Hindu culture. Why should you be punished for what you are because of something that your ancestors were? Even now in the pinds of pakistan you have whole tribes/castes living together, everyone marrying each others cousins etc.

Just for the pure fact of - not wanting to intergrate. Not wanting to marry lower - or even higher. And then if someone does - there is a mass outcry.

Someone please explain why we are still using Hindu caste system in our Pakistan Muslim society - especially as God tells us that we are all born equal.

Re: Caste predjudice

The prejudice is only with people that know their caste. If you know it it means it has value to you.

Re: Caste predjudice

I think it is an innate trait to segregate (competition for the same resources, dominance over others). The lines of division are artificial but the compulsion to compete and divide is inherent. Therefore, one group sets itself apart from another and has biases against the other group.

Re: Caste predjudice

if in a ‘parha likha forum’ we can have http://www.paklinks.com/gs/life-and-relationships/447542-ladies-if-you-were-unmarried-and-you-have-to-pick-a-partner.html , why not caste system in a illiterate majority Pakistan?

BTW, do we have untouchables?

Re: Caste predjudice

^I was wondering about the untouchables question as well..

I haven't got a clue what caste I've come from and I couldn't care less..

PinkOrchids, did u see that Channel 4 show a while ago called 'The Family?' The girl on there, Shay, was practically disowned by her mum (didn't turn up to the wedding and neither did her brother :() for marrying into the Grewal's family.. can't remember if they were Hindu or Sikh tho..

Re: Caste predjudice

^ I thought she was disowned because she married someone of her own choice…was the actual issue related to castes?? :hmmm:

Re: Caste predjudice

^She mentioned the caste issue (and I think Sunny's mum did as well) but now u mention it it was prob a mixture of both..

Re: Caste predjudice

The people who discrminiate on the basis of caste are fools. No offence is intended but that is the case. I used to think previously it was only uneducated fools who believed in this, but I've found out that there are plenty of educated fools who subscribe to this jahil, Hindu custom. Unfortunately, I have found that it is mostly Punjabis who are obsessed about zaat *and *baradari.

People use the stupid excuse that 'we'll have the same culture if we marry into the same caste.' Bewakoofon, are you pagans to subscribe to this view that different castes have different statuses and customs? No, in Pakistan, most ethnicities have pretty much the same culture. There is more difference between a Pushtoon and a Punjabi in terms of culture than a Rajput Punjabi and a Jatt Punjabi and I know tons of Pushtoon-Punjabi marriages that are wildly successful; so the excuse that 'culture wohi ho ga to compatibility main asaani ho gi' is mostly bull. 99% of most Pakistanis' culture is the same as that of any other Pakistani.

The plain and simple truth why people do this is because of racism. The belief their blood is superior to someone's from a different caste and must not be 'tarnished' by marrying into another caste. Aray yaar, do people even know what the term 'caste' means? It is a Hindu concept denoting status based on blood. Khuch sharam karo those silly Rajputs and Arayains and Shaikhs and Syeds and Pushtoons and Iranis and Arabs who think marrying outside their group is blasphemy. They are practising pagan rituals and making haraam for themself what Allah has made halal, which is a form of shirk.

Allah un ko iss magroori say tawfeeq ada farmaye, AMIN!

Re: Caste predjudice

I personally like to think caste is different from background. Like in the US, you have southerners and people from north. I feel like that's just your background and where you are from. I grew up in South so I know they like to differentiate Notherners.

TLK's poll was more focused on background and where your ancestors originally came from. What part or province of Pakistan. Caste to me is more like umm lets say in Punjabis; Rajputs, Butts, Jatts etc.

Everyone may view it differently. For me what's a no-no is when people ask oh so you are Rajput so you should marry only a Rajput because they are superior. My husband who is a Punjabi, his family is crazy crazy about caste. Most people in his family don't talk to me because I don't speak their language or am one of them.

Re: Caste predjudice

Spiral this is what I mean - if you marry outside of your caste you are excluded from the family. Its ridiculous.

I assume a untouchable in muslim pakistani culture is a christian pakistani. The apparently are in low jobs - that normal muslims would not even think about. I find it degrading. I mean this is a relgious aspect but there are also some castes that are classed as the same - such as Masali's

Re: Caste predjudice

PinkOrchids, did u manage to resolve things with ur parents regarding the caste issue in the end?
