Cartoons

A cartoon is a form of two-dimensional illustrated visual art. While the specific definition has changed over time, modern usage refers to a typically non-realistic or semi-realistic drawing or painting intended for satire, caricature, or humor, or to the artistic style of such works.

The term originated in the Middle Ages and first described a preparatory drawing for a piece of art, such as a painting, fresco, tapestry, or stained glass window. In the 19th century, it came to refer to humorous illustrations in magazines and newspapers, and in the early 20th century and onward it referred to comic strips and animated films.

Hergé, was a Belgian comics writer and artist. His best known and most substantial work is the 23 completed comic books in The Adventures of Tintin series, which he wrote and illustrated from 1929 until his death in 1983. The character of Tintin was partly inspired by Georges’s brother Paul Remi, an officer in the Belgian army.

Martin Handford is an English children’s author and illustrator who gained worldwide fame in the mid-1980s with his Where’s Wally? books. He began drawing crowds when he was 4 or 5 years old. The style of art executed by Handford is probably the most famous example of “Wimmelbilderbuch” drawings which are special picture books with “fold-out” pages and abundant images of richly detailed humans, animals and things.
