Living in England , Some people are saying dont do laminates all through the house , you will have to use more of heating to keep the house warm …
Someothers are telling us carpets aint too good coz due to the moisture and rains all year long , the carpets absorb more dirt and chances of having bugs are greater ..
Me , I feel I want the laminate coz they are easier to clean and lesser hassle then carpets …
I feel in moist countries like ours , we shouldnt have carpets at all .. cleaning them is such a hassle ... but then for many carpets are a way to keep the home warm all through the year :(
You can have your carpet professionally washed every year or so CB. We have oak flooring in our hallway and the rest of the house (minus kitchen and bathroom and conservatory) is carpeted. I don't think I could live with wooden flooring throughout the 'living areas' as it would just be too cold all the time, esp since we have a 'no shoes' policy in our house.
I stayed over at my cousins a few times during ramazan, and it wasn't pleasant waking up and having to walk on a cold floor to find my slippers or go down to eat. Plus when your reading namaz it's much more comfortable when you lay your prayer mat over the carpet rather than directly over a wooden floor :)
Hmmm .. thanks for the valuable feedback Amor , I will definitely keep those pointers in mind .. we have carpets in the current home and its seeming like an impossible task to keep the shoes out of the carpet ... by family members and specially guests ... and when I do the carpet clean one in a month , the carpet doesnt dry for days and days .... So i have been thinking of putting rugs on the laminate floor rather then have the entire place carpeted .. but lets see inshalalh ...
I know what you mean about the carpets staying wet... the best thing to do is pick a very hot day to do it and then leave all doors and windows open to let it air dry as quick as possible. I know its difficult to keep shoes from outside coming in to carpeted areas all the time, but the best way I've found is to have my home shoes ready at the door for me when I get in, so I can slip in to them straight away and then put my outside shoes straight in to the cloak room. And with guests it can often be difficult to say 'take your shoes off please' but I find the easiest way to approach this is just to say 'this is the room we read namaz in, so could you please remove your shoes'...
Rugs are also a good idea if you're dead keen on getting wooden floors, get some double sided tape and that way they won't move about all over the place.
Another thing, you mention laminate... If you can afford it don't get laminate, but go for proper wooden floors, they look better, last longer and are less prone to getting damaged.
I would say get laminate and then for some areas get area rugs.
much easier to keep clean, and aside from whether the carpet looks clean, you just have to read up on how much dirt, dust and dustmites are there.
I have hardwood, well actually bamboo flooring in my entire ground floor and carpets on the first floor, but am planning to replace upstairs carpets with hardwood, bamboo or laminate in a few years
Thanks X2 for highlighting the dustmite issue , its definitely a concern I have always had with carpets ... and I love the rug idea .. its much more hygienic to clean the rugs and the floor , rather then the carpets ...
rugs can be rotated between rooms, u can rugs for diff seasons
if you get tired of a look you can easily change it
one of my pals has these interlocking rug tiles in his loft for area rugs, he mixes them up every so often, mixing diff patterns and colours from diff rooms..
I personally think he has too much time on his hands to do that, but in his view, and rightly so, this way he can keep changing the look of the place without spending a penny.
Thats a brilliant point X2 .. I am infact decorating all of my rooms in colors that will go well with each other so that the curtains and rugs /cushions can be mixed and matched for a new look once in a while …
We [intentionally] don't have any carpet in the house...because of allergies/dustmites etc. It's all dark aged oak throughout the house (with carbon heating insulation underneath in most rooms), except the kitchen and bathrooms, which are tiled. Just make sure you get good quality underlay for your laminate.
Plus, when you have the nuggets, it'll be so much easier to wipe spills from a hardwood floor. :D
I must be the only one here that dislikes laminate flooring (sorry CB!)
I just think it's so easy to end up with the shiny plastic-y looking type that looks fake, unless you get the kind that has a real wood veneer and is laid professionally - in which case you might as well have real wooden floors.
I have cream carpets in my house but I don't find it any more hassle than more practical carpets as I would never let anyone wear shoes inside the household anyway and those that dare to ignore this certainly don't get invited back :p
My personal preferance is hardwood, or high quality laminate. In my house we've got hardwood floors, but have had to carpet the bedrooms and the hall, as it's sooo cold otherwise (and expensive to heat). This is just a temporary measure until we get the heating re-installed later in the year. We'll be getting underfloor heating when we do get new heating so no issues with the cold there.
If you do opt for laminate/wood floors ensure you get a really good underlay.
Carpet rugs are undeniably stylish. They have been around for hundreds of years and still remain functional. Interior designers continue to use them to mesmerize clients into seeing how wonderful a space can look with the help of well suited rugs.
I would go for carpets. We had wooden floor in the last house and it was freezing all the time. But I do like laminate flooring in some parts of the house like in the front room, tiles in the kitchen and bath. But for bedrooms and living areas definitely no to laminate floor.
