caribbean med school...

Hi,
Has someone from the forum has been to med schools in caribbean or knows someone who has studied there?
I want to know which one is good, which one to avoid? and ur experience there?
I am in US and interested in knowing about the admission process as well…

Thanks,

Sanna

I know about 20 people who are in the Caribbean, no exaggeration. The majority of the students at those schools are desis. Not all of them are nalaik, some are really smart, but didn’t have time to do all the extracurriculars demanded of US applicants.

ok so top four schools are SGU, Ross, Saba, and AUC.

SGU is the most expensive (about 250k including housing) for the 4 years, but it has luxurious dorms, and the island (grenada) is pretty nice too. For 3rd and 4th year, you don’t have to worry about scheduling clinical rotations because SGU has so much money that they paid 100 million dollars to some hospitals in New York to reserve spots for their students. So if you go here, you are well taken care of. People say it’s like a hotel. It is also the most selective school.

Ross is on a crappy island, but you only have to spend 16 months there (vs. 20 for SGU) because the 5th semester is in the US. You can spend it in either Michigan or Miami. Basically they try to prep you for clinicals and give you time to study for Step 1.

Saba is a really small school on a deserted island; some people like it because smaller school=more attention and a more tight knit group. Other ppl hate it bc the island is basically dead and they have water shortages. The main draw is that it is super cheap; i think it is only like 7k/semester vs about 22k for SGU. Lots of Canadian students go here.

AUC i don’t know much about, but you can check Valuemd.com to see posts about it.

There is no way to know an exact figure for your total costs for the 4 years, because it depends on where you do your electives. ex. if you do them in NYC, you will spend a lot more $ than someone in Nebraska.

Avoid any school on this list. UAMS Pediatrics Residency | Introduction

I really really wanted to go to a Caribbean school, but it will be a big burden on my parents. The max stafford loan is 138k so if you need more than that, your parents will have to take out private loans.

i think most GS ppl don’t have an interest in this topic-u can find more carib med students on Studentdoctor.net or valuemd.com.

Re: caribbean med school...

the students that went to caribbean schools are too busy now to reply :D but you can do a quick search in this forum to find info about caribbean schools. there have been 2 or 3 really good threads about such things.

tehre is a lot of stuff online, especially in the websites jalebi mentioned, but a lot of the stuff is really really scary. a lot of people scare the crap out of you, so in the end, it's you decision. i know a few of my friends that are currently going to caribbean schools, and in the end, it all matters how well you study. they range from going to St. Matthews, Saba and Windsor. 1 of them is currently studying for his USMLE, one of them (from windsor) already went to IL to study (i forget what their program is called) and the others are still studying. but the key word is they are studying hard. AUC, from when i talked to a few friends sounds the best out of all of them. the island isn't that small, there are more tourists there, so that means more things to do, they have a stronger muslim community on the island, so jumas every week, nicer dorms, and the tuition fee isn't that high. (19K for a semester i think. check AUC's webstie to be sure)

the next best thing to SGU is Ross. they have really good clinicals, but from my understanding, their admission is tougher as well, especially into the clinical years.

Re: caribbean med school...

Avoid xavier, I've heard bad things about it.

Re: caribbean med school...

join caribean school forum and you can get all info

Re: caribbean med school...

1 is SGU

2 is Ross

3 is AUC

choose wisely. I have a ton of friends down there. You must study very hard to make it because you will be competing with medical students from American med schools.
Avoid Windsor and AUA
