Made my own career path throughout high school, undergrad, and grad although throughout high school my parents were gung-ho set on sending me to med school. Good thing I put my step down on where MY interests lay though (business). You can't be forced into a profession. It really has to be something you feel passionate about and are willing to be best at in order to gain a sense of accomplishment in that field at some point in life.
hmcq, there were certain hopes..not expectations, on the direction diff people in the family wanted me to go.
I made the decisions pretty much all the time, with discussion and advise from the family but in the end the decision was mine.
I changed career direction from engineering to business soon after I started college, and then within business changed my area of focus. My parents discussed this to ensure that I was making sound decisions based on good reasoning but left the decision up to me
To be honest i did not have any idea what should i do after my inter. Most of my colleagues were prearing for SATs and i did not even know what SAT stands for. My dad hoped i would be an engineer following his footsteps, so i went for it but sooner i realized that this thing is not clicking and by then iw as intersted in computers so went for computers as my major, swtiched college and in a two years down the line, i decided what my area of focus is going to be in this vast field.
So in short, first it was my dad and then it was me. And Dad made sure that i have enough logic in my change of heart.

My family is full of Doctor's. My dad wasn't from a very financial well family, and unfortunately didn't get accepted into med school his first try (no money for second try), so at that time he went and became a social worker (which was in demand). Fortunately he was able to come to Canada.
Now obviously the second I was born (only son), he put doctor into my mind. Once I hit high school I knew it wasn't for me, but I gave it a try for my first year of university, and finally got the courage to tell my dad that this isn't for me and I'm more into business.
Fortunately enough, at the age of 16 I've been working part time for Wal-Mart, which persuaded me for business. Now I am trying for MBA in Marketing to work with Wal-Mart. Presently I'm in my 3rd year of university.
I guess the morale of this story is, follow your dream. But no matter what you do, make sure you excell the BEST at it! Because its your life, not anyone elses, and as long one becomes educated, and is happy with his/her life, it's all good.
Also I'm pleased that my dad didn't take it THAT badly. He is now very happy. :)
Interesting... my initial choices primarily were made by my parents (Dad mostly) but after getting into college/undergrad I have pretty much decided the choices I want to make. In our family my parents pretty much said the first degree you get into will be either engineering or medice and what you do after that in life is really up to you.
