Career of the future...

Few years back everyone wanted to become doctors and engineers …

then times changed and there was an IT qualification craze…

recently there has been a surge in HR qualifications …

what do you think are careers of the future?

Re: Career of the future...

surge in HR education? really?
missed that
but there is a good reason, while the current employment market may not indicate it
the competition for qualified talent will become intense within the decade, may be some delay there due to baby boomers now delaying retirement since their portfolios have taken a beating but new skillsets are needed and steady hand roles will need to be refilled.

so finding, retaining, growing the right talent will be critical. and HR would be in the middle of it

Re: Career of the future...

^ After then the HR will get fired too....just like 'Up in the Air' movie...

Re: Career of the future...

space washroom cleaners ?

Re: Career of the future...

Outsourcing experts. People who can help find someone who can work for peanuts and still be thankful that he/she has a job.

Re: Career of the future...

if finding and keeping the right talent is going to be important, finding and retaining HR talent that helps with that is going to be important as well.

Re: Career of the future...

Don't know if there's such a thing as career of the future, but healthcare seems to be a very "happening" sector right now - be it management, policy/governance, technology, or other roles.

Re: Career of the future...

Anything that has to do with Nanotechnology has great prospects and if you look into the IT paradigm then it would be governance / compliance of financial information systems....

Re: Career of the future…

How about IT Security ? :hmmm: been hearing alot about this kind of stuff lately …

Re: Career of the future...

to be honest, working in IT is like a beating a dead horse, same old concepts being recycled, rebranded and all.... as for IT security, from what has been my observation, is nothing more than glorifying best practices of server administration (which isn't very difficult by the way), analyzing programs for silly oversights by programmers and looking out for logs ... its all the rage these days, but considering the burgeoning cost of IT sec deptts, i think the trend of hiring hefty CIOs, dedicated security specialists by enterprise level organizations isn't likely to last long and is likely to be limited to just carrier or service providers .... but again i maybe wrong... rather i hope i am wrong, i got a lot hanging on itsec..

Re: Career of the future...

^ interesting observation solar... and I do agree to a certain extent about the security roles being over-hyped in the past and many of these skills slowly becoming a part and parcel of an IT generalist's toolkit.

On the other hand, one area in IT which I think is still flourishing well in terms of demand is that of IT architecture. I say this because I get to see a lot of companies trying to make sense of the SAAS and cloud computing landscape while working on their own integration through SOA, web services and the like. Things in this area keep getting more complex very regularly and most technologies although a reincarnation of something we've seen previously, do seem to offer incremental advantages over their predecessors. There are a number of models and blueprints that can be followed, and organizations will need proficient IT architects to help them adopt the most relevant of these models and then revamp their processes and workflows to reap the benefits from these implementations.

Again, this is just an observation based on industry trends and some discussions with clients over the past couple of years.

Re: Career of the future...

it gotta be something to do with Enviornment.

Re: Career of the future...

Yes and no.

Yes in the sense basic security is not complicated, and it should be bets praqctice for any sys admin worth their salt.

No in the sense, many (if not most) admins dont have forensic, incident reponse, or able to truely detect or test defences. From what I have seen even for professionals difficult to keep with current information. I cant see many admins understanding currenet exploitation techniques, able to craft customised shellcode or understand failings in IPS/IDS.

I agree with cost only major enterprises can afford to hire dedicated professionals. So we may see service providers taking this role. However SME will still want professionals so expect as now plenty of consultancy for the future. End of the day a system cant replace an individual who understands bad guys or how systems work together. Majority of weakneses are in system (not application) implementations. Cant audit that from nessus.

Re: Career of the future...

careers of THE future...or of OUR future?

lets talk about our careers...thats more interesting. cant really put a finger on careers of the future, its just too bland! but if anything,

Re: Career of the future...

well.. people are shelling out more and more money to live longer and longer while hooked up onto machines. this is a well documented phenomenon in the western world, and is only bound to intensify and spread all over in the coming decades.
