Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

Ravage where could we actually discuss this then? I frankly think we need more pakistanis in the UN system. We have a lot but having more can not hurt. So as much information that can be provided to people should be seen as a positive, if they wish to join the UN.

GS I know for a fact has always been trying to increase its sphere of influence when it comes to the up and comers of the Pakistani community Internationally. So is there a forum where this can be discussed or not?

Second Ali when did your dad leave? I have been here since Jan/Feb. I know most of the Pakistanis in UNMIS and UNAMID. Gotta get the dirt on you. Plus after 4 years as a diplomat I thought I would give the UN a shot.

Now Ravage is there anywhere were you can split this thread to, so that anybody who is interested in the UN can get the information they desire?

Re: New Government

Pcg: Yea, why?
Lusi, absolutely. :-)

CM:
My father left in Oct 2007. was there only for 2-3 months, before that in Liberia.
And now he is retired.
It's great to hear this, CM. So you finally managed to exchange seats with your father at the UN :-D.

Re: New Government

Ha! Nah first one to be in the UN. My dad is old school MOFA. Ministry of Foriegn Affairs. You can see why I am such a hardened patriot. Screw political loyalties mine go to the man who can aid the average Pakistani the most. It was Musharraf till he turned into a meglomaniac and now the political "elite".

I support those who make the country better.

Re: New Government

I can only second that CM. I have similiar stance on Pak politics.
I'm glad to see you back and do come online too so that we can chit chat.
Btw which dept. of UN? Your loyality is to New York HQ, hena?

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

Loyalty is to the nation my friend. Currently with UNAMID in Darfur. So its a DPKO mission.

If anybody wants help with the UN and has any questions about the UN do ask. I am here to help.

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

It's a tough mission I have heard. Living conditions as worse as Liberia or East Timor if not worse. Btw my father was at UNMIS. You just came too late otherwise you might have had the chance to meet him. Is Pak Army present there as well? Your mission assignment is for a year isnt It? Or maybe even 6 months.

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

1 year P2. Youngest P2 in UNAMID from what I have been told. Darfur is tough man. They justed upped our MSA like crazy. Frankly field work for a year or two before settling down seems to be the plan. I don't plan on doing a lot of field work after this.

Pak refuses to send army for Darfur. Political nightmare. We got some Milobs here and some recruited from UNMIS on TDY. But that is it.

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

Gosh, does someone have to be as smart as you to be in the UN, CM? How about as diplomatic and tactful? Are those required traits?

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

Seminole if you haven't realize by now I merely post on GS to annoy people. I usually do it when I have no work and waiting on others to get back to me. If you actually think this personality (The CM personality) functions in real life you are sorely mistaken.

Its just something I do to kill time. It's sad that I can get under people's skin so easily.

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

Well thats awesome...Some achievement I must say. My father retired as P2/P3 so you have already done a lot! And well I can understand what you mean, but thats field work and my father done that for almost 12-13 years!!
And then money matters...doesnt It?
I bet you still unmarried hehe

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

No, Seminole. You have a lil chance too :p

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

CM, If you do come to Vienna HQ. Let me know.

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

hehee interesting, could I have a job at the UN :p ..
btw Ali ur dad retired, had no idea ...I thought that he was still working. .. so when are u going to join your father's steps. ?

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

sure dude, so CM, how can one get in UN in the environmental initiatives area, w/o being an environmental engineer :)

or how would an engineer in renewable energy or environment and water resources get into UN. what areas, what do they look for?

is UN competitive with private sector jobs compensation wise??

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

Yea retired last year.

UN jobs are no more for free but approach does help a lot.
I would like to Saadia, but prob Is at Missions family life is no more.
Secondly, I'm from the IT sector so It's quite different then.
Field work requires hardly any IT Specialists. Cant work as an COnsultant at MIssions. Maybe as an diplomatic consultant ;-)

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

X2 the UN handles Environment in three stages. In New York. In Geneva and in Nairobi, Kenya. The Organization that does the most work is UNEP. However a majority of the other UN agencies like WHO or say UNESCO have small environment groups. To my knowledge most of the project manager jobs are not engineering orientated.

So if you are in the environment field I would suggest looking up jobs in UNEP. You will however be posted into Nairobi. What you could do is try to get a job in New York with some of the Environment related projects there. I know the Sachs and his Millenium Development Goals have some people with an environment background.

Most of the UN jobs are actually managerial. Meaning the people who have a Master's in International Relations, Economics, MBA etc all get jobs there.

But before I can help you more I need to know the following.

  1. You have a Masters? If it is from the US or Europe you have a better chance of getting in.
  2. How many years work experience do you have? Is any of it in the US or Europe?
  3. Do you have any years of work experience in the field?

Now all the jobs for New York are found at jobs.un.org - We call it the Galaxy website. Check what you can find under environment and what you think you have relevant experience for. Once you find a job post it here and I will guide you through the entire application process ie what are the stages and who decides what and what goes where.

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

Abay Ali. IT is a huge thing in UNAMID here. I would suggest you ask your dad to speak with Widermark if he knows him. But yeah 90% of DPKO missions are non-family stations. Plus the chance you can get killed or taken hostage is very real.

For UNAMID we get (EU military) level 3 kidnapping/hostage training.

[/QUOTE]

why?

is it serving the purpose for what it was made for?

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]

Because its a game of real politik. More people you have inside, the more good you can do for your nation and its government. As for the UN, it easily has more then 1000 "purposes" which it has to deal with. Accomplishing even one is a major accomplishment.

Re: Career in the UN [split: New Government (in Pak Affairs]
