Career in SAP

Anyone know demand/pay/requirements of SAP Basis administrator (alone) or with BW, CRM, finance or any other modules?

Does system/Unix administration, Oracle DBA experience and PM knowledge helps? Upto what extent?

Please share your SAP know how here.

Thanks.

Re: Career in SAP

There are other threads here discussing ERP in general and SAP in particular. To answer your question, FI/CO and Basis have higher demand than other modules.

Basis can fly by itself with right IT experience.

If you are shooting for Basis, then system/unix administration will be great.

SAP in general is making a huge comeback. However, from what I understand, since there are more openings in FI/CO and Basis, the job interviews for these 2 modules tend to be easier compared to other modules where the competition is tougher.

Re: Career in SAP

I agree with Jayzee’s post for the most part.

My own background in SAP is along functional dimensions of HR and BW, and have been involved in a couple of consulting engagements in the implementation of these modules.

So although I don’t have direct experience on the system administration front of SAP, I have interacted with people who work on the backend. From my own experience in Solaris system administration (I did my Network Admin cert on Solaris 9 a few years back but didn’t work in that capacity for too long), I can say that Unix administration experience would certainly help in Basis administration.

Towards making your role in the backend a little more interesting and wide-ranging, I would advise assuming a business analyst type role to help devise appropriate workflow processes and facilitate the link between functional requirements and technical specifications. In an ERP environment, this skillset is crucial and indispensable. Also, these days, there’s a lot of demand for ERP professionals who can incorporate Sarbanes Oxley 404 or its Canadian equivalent 52-111 in the implementation and maintenance of SAP. So I would definitely suggest that anyone who’s considering any type of SAP administration role to get trained in Sox related practices etc. This can be a huge plus!

Thank you guys. Its a big help indeed. UT, I didn't know you had some SAP background as well. Good to know.

Can you guide me on resources on SAP and SOX if you have any. May be on PM.

Re: Career in SAP

SOX as an Saranes Oxley? What interest you in SOX?

PM as in Project Management or Program Manament? they different in several respects and depending on who you talk to they might tell you they are entirely different fields.

Smooth... if you are thinking of getting into the basis side.... target a company's IT department that has SAP as well... Most companies would have an IT department that looks after the databases and other IT systems along with their SAP systems... once u get in.. i'm sure you can move more towards SAP.. either that,,, or a company currently implementing SAP... and theres nothing like hands-on experience. Books will only teach u so much. Your IT sys admin background will definitely make it easier for u. I just think its a bit hard to break into the market with no practical experience.

I will agree with jayzee... but I would also disagree....
FICO and Basis are by far the most common areas out there.... and hence would have a lot more resources(people) out there in the market compared to specialized fields like BW and CRM and SCM etc.

If you are specifically interested in Basis, then ofcourse thats what you should gun for.... but if ur in general wanting to get into SAP and are not sure... I'd say concentrate more on something more specific....

This is coming straight from SAP internally... they recognize the fact that the ERP market itself is getting saturated... and there wont be much money in it for them as such as the time goes on... They are now putting most of their energies behind these value adding modules like BW, CRM, SCM, xAPPs (xMII) etc. so these are good options for you as well... All in all... Basis still is here to stay as all of these would require basis guys to maintain them... i just personally think there,d be a lot more competition to get into a basis role because there would be more skilled people out there in this area already.
