I dont think there is one correct or wrong answer here…the thing people need to consider when starting a career is to find something they like and go for it. I remember in my BCS days back in 1997-98 there were a lot of people in my class who just wanted to learn programming and make a lot of money…since computer was the turning out to be the trend at that time. Most of them hated working in IT and had to go for something else. Its very hard in this day and time to switch careers so its very important to pick a line of work and try to stick to it.

There was no competition those days but today it is especially in the IT field. Since you are in the IT, I am seeking opinion of people like you. So basically, one shouldn’t ignore their interest or something they like to do when it come to choosing career otherwise it becomes hard to deal with the chosen career?

Software engineer is the best if asking in terms of salary. Consultant usually comes after many years of working.

These two are on my mind, thinking to start career as a Software Engineer then later join BCS to become IT consultant.

In any country of the world IT skills are high in demand . With ever connecting world demand is ever expanding. You have many choices when it comes to choosing a career to pursue in this field. You will never be bored at work there is always a new problem to solve and u will be a hero and gain respect if u solve this problem before the time given to u.In terms of money IT jobs are highly rewarding.
In my personal experience I never saw an IT person jobless for long time or living a mediocre life. In USA when someone with 2+ years of any IT experience posts resume they get overwhelmed by calls from recruiters. They do not have to go look for a job ,job comes looking for them.

I agree with you. I am glad I chose IT to study further,my sis was in medicine and she told me not to choose IT, this field might not be good etc but I am happy with it now. This is so true ,different companies are looking for people in IT. Some companies have arranged career fairs at my uni to attract students already before finishing their graduation degrees. Since there are few women in this field , big companies are looking for female workers, I have been to few events held by Microsoft,IBM,Sky etc
