Career in IT

IT careers have been popular for many maths, computer, and engineering students. What is the best future job Career in IT? A Software Engineer, IT Consultant , IT lecturer etc ?

Re: Career in IT

I dont think there is one correct or wrong answer here....the thing people need to consider when starting a career is to find something they like and go for it. I remember in my BCS days back in 1997-98 there were a lot of people in my class who just wanted to learn programming and make a lot of money....since computer was the turning out to be the trend at that time. Most of them hated working in IT and had to go for something else. Its very hard in this day and time to switch careers so its very important to pick a line of work and try to stick to it.

Re: Career in IT

Software engineer is the best if asking in terms of salary. Consultant usually comes after many years of working.

Re: Career in IT

In any country of the world IT skills are high in demand . With ever connecting world demand is ever expanding. You have many choices when it comes to choosing a career to pursue in this field. You will never be bored at work there is always a new problem to solve and u will be a hero and gain respect if u solve this problem before the time given to u.In terms of money IT jobs are highly rewarding.
In my personal experience I never saw an IT person jobless for long time or living a mediocre life. In USA when someone with 2+ years of any IT experience posts resume they get overwhelmed by calls from recruiters. They do not have to go look for a job ,job comes looking for them.

Re: Career in IT

There was no competition those days but today it is especially in the IT field. Since you are in the IT, I am seeking opinion of people like you. So basically, one shouldn't ignore their interest or something they like to do when it come to choosing career otherwise it becomes hard to deal with the chosen career?

These two are on my mind, thinking to start career as a Software Engineer then later join BCS to become IT consultant.

I agree with you. I am glad I chose IT to study further,my sis was in medicine and she told me not to choose IT, this field might not be good etc but I am happy with it now. This is so true ,different companies are looking for people in IT. Some companies have arranged career fairs at my uni to attract students already before finishing their graduation degrees. Since there are few women in this field , big companies are looking for female workers, I have been to few events held by Microsoft,IBM,Sky etc

Re: Career in IT

Is it true that Programmers get paid highly in the EU?

Re: Career in IT

I think there is a need to balance what one likes with what one can earn. If you ask me, my top of the list would be getting a Masters in Creative Writing but there are hardly any jobs to be had in that besides teaching (which I don't liek at all) and journalism. Great to hear that you like IT as a whole.

Re: Career in IT

How about game developing as a profession in IT? Do they get paid a lot?

Re: Career in IT

I think this is going to change in the new few years. Abuse of the H1 program is very strong, and jobs are being shipped out fast.

Re: Career in IT

What is H1 program?

Re: Career in IT

h1 is work visa i think for USA. tell me about it, they have done same to UK work visas too! "Hetch 1" :)

these days this abuse is taking place when they try to place consultants in UK US or EU while sitting in Banglore! sick of getting calls from them.

Data scientist.
Analytical and some tech background is hot and getting hotter

Re: Career in IT

You get to play games all day, who needs pay!

Though not in my realm of experience, it’s apparently the game designers who get the money. I suppose the vetern developers are well compensated, but from what I understand, the competition is quite stiff as the job/developer ration is low compared to other fields. This, for the big budget, console style games.

App development is a whole different ball of wax.

Re: Career in IT

First, pick a region you'd like to work in.

Then, check out the job boards/aggregator sites.

In north america, for example, take a look at indeed.com. It's horrible to actually find a job, but will give you a rough idea of the availability of jobs in a particular field.

Then check out a site like payscale.com. Not the greatest, and I never found it to be all that accurate, but it will give you a relative indication of how well paying a particular field is over another.

My humble advice: first, find a line of work you enjoy. Then chase the salary.

Re: Career in IT

It is advisable to specialize in a certain field. Because even in the IT sector there is surplus of fresh graduates with no experience, but if you specialize in a certain field, lets say there is so many Systerm Administrators. But if you are specialized Unix administrator then, the chances of you finiding a job are very high. In-fact, someone who is a Unix administrator doesn't even need to take on a job. They are so scarce that they work freelance, and get paid more than anyone with a monthly salaray.
Similarly there is Oracle Developers who are very scarce.

Re: Career in IT

Yeah if you are Reaaaaallly good at it, then. But there is many specialized disciplines that fall under Game programming, like UI, AI, Gameplay, Scripter, etc. So it's usually done with a whole team of developers.
