Car gurus, please help me!

Firstly some background:

Poor student. Car broke down completely, need to buy a new car asap.

Choices are Nissan, Toyota, and perhaps Kia (I think these are the most cost efficient ones out there?)

Basically I want something which is the least expensive but is also a durable one. Should last me at least 6 years without any mechanic visits.

Your recommendations?

Also, since I make zero pennies and am in fact in negative balance, I can’t buy a car under my name. However, is there a way about this? Can my parent co-sign as guarantor but the car remains in my name? I will be making the payments and I want to use this opportunity to build my credit history.

Ok people, bachao me with your advice. Thank you.

Re: Car gurus, please help me!

No car will last without visit to the mechanic, unless you’re a semi-mechanic yourself and keep it in pristine condition.

Indication for a 6 year trouble-free period, would land you squarely in Kia territory. Other manufacturers only offer a 3 Year/36,000Mile warranty. Kia gives you 10 Year/100,000 Miles. And their vehicles are pretty decent. Perhaps not as reputable as Toyota/Honda/Nissan, but still favorite among the new consumers.

I would test drive your favorite model from each make. Compare warranty, and maintenance contracts they offer. Some manufacturers even offer free oil-change for a certain amount of time. On-time oil change will be all you need to do for at least the first year. Mileage based major maintenance kicks after post-10,000 miles, and even then your manufacturer warranty covers it.

Think beyond 3 years, because that’s when major components will need replacement, and unless you have manufacturer warranty beyond the 3 years, you’ll likely pay out of pocket. Do not buy extended warranty from other 3rd parties. They work like insurance, they will send someone to assess the damage, investigate the cause, if it’s mechanical then they’ll fix it, if it’s found to be caused by you, they’ll flatly refuse to cover it.

I hope that helps.

Good advice Teggy.
I’m not sure on the NA market but do Kia’s hold their value at all?
What about the smaller Hondas, Nissans and Toyotas?
I’m pretty sure they are good value for money and have great reliability.

Also, since you’re a n00b at the whole car thing, I would advise you do some reliability surveys for peace of mind.
Try and find out if anyone you know has some knowledge of cars, it always helps if you know someone who can give you a hand with basic maintenance.

Good luck with the whip! Tell us what you end up with.
