Car for Tree Huggers

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

Who is the target consumer here?

I just dont understand the 25mph thing. Only for those that drive in residential neighborhoods? Even then 30 is usually the limit.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

tree-huggers.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

it's for moms driving their kids to school.. can't be for freeways.. most have a lowest speed limit of 40mph

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

I'm with Mr. Fraudia on this one. Chicago has tradition, culture, architecture, great restaraunts, great sports teams and great native Chicagoians. Houston is hot and humid, full of franchise restaraunts with a Wal Mart on every corner, higher crime rates, the Texans and Hilary Duff.

As far as those who are concerned with the very real problems (current and future) caused by automobiles, they should be commended for driving these type cars, not ridiculed. A 25 mph car isn't the end all, but it's going in the right direction. We need to do something.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

seminole, in all seriousness, these cars could be great for local.. non highway traffic. couriers, delivery vehicles, even parking cops and postal vehicles etc, although they should pump up the top speed to 35-40.

in some cities they have the subscription based car rental service..these could be very good for those as well.

I guess the point is, that every little bit helps.

However, I think these type of things really do take attention away from bigger issues. If we are burning tons of coal or fossil fuel to generate electricity, then what did we really solve? I am not simply concerned with source of energy for my vehicle at distribution point, but how was it created.

we need more focus on renewable energy, get bldgs LEED certified, green bldg programs, harness wind and solar energy etc etc.

without that this and the whole ethanol stuff is window dressing

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

Kaleem Bhai, how is the GMC truck coming along with $3 a gallon gas?

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

Until politicians can break away from the stranglehold of the energy companies I am afraid this window dressing is all we have. It is probably the best example on how corporate interests in politics are damaging the US.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

GMC trucks have bigger problems than just the $3/gallon gas

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

yep, did u see the michigan dem come out against Obama ..Obama talked about Detroit making better fuel economy cars, and this dude came out today and basically told Obama that he canttell detriot anything...I am paraphrasing. Of course teh dude is a 'friend' of car companies..i.e. gets big time lobby funding from teh big 3 or the unions.

as if detriot does NOT have any problems. sagging sales. continuing quality problems, uninspired design, etc etc.

we need significantly better public transport also.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

^ actually people who think that they are living in a "real city" pay higher prices for gas.. in texas we do not.... I just filled up my tank for $2.79/gallon...BTW, Tahoe is doing well....

Seminole, please revise your statistics for crime rates... if getting mugged, paying more for mortgage, food and all amenities is culture in your book, than please go to chicago and enjoy your life....while we in texas enjoy wide open spaces, woods for camping etc .

Queer, you are welcome to come to Houston any time and trust me I will onlt take you to places in Houston and Sugar Land (suburb).

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

Fraudia Bhaijaan, it is claimed (not by me) that the fossil fuel consumption of an electric car including even the assumption that coal was used to generate the electricity is better than gas burning cars. Mainly because electric cars are good for densely populated metro cities that generate a lot of smog. And in the grand scheme of things, they want to get away from coal, which means that if electric cars go main stream and the electricity goes solar/wind or even nuclear, maybe we can stop global warming.

Speaking of which, Kaleem Bhai, does Texas allow global warming to be taught in schools or is it also akin to evolution?

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

Seminole, do you have any idea how much does that sector contribute to our economy and employment? I always get a chuckle when people just say this stuff just to hate the big corporations.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

queer, or to have more fun, u can just walk around in the airport and go back :D

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

Kaleem Bhai, if I had an oil refinery in my back yard I would get gas 20 cents cheaper too.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

Pray tell if they teach that in Colorado (or at least that is where I think you are). I am sure that public schools all over the country has been taken over by the lib police.... they probably do talk about it.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

AJ, I agree with you for the most part, although you have shifted te problem elsewhere...out of cities, which is similar to cities dumping their trash out of teh city.

but you answered my biggest concern within your own statement which i have highlighted.

so while this is a decent step, without other steps this is not going to do much.

Even if acceptability of this is high, the impact will be so so

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

This jib jab song nicely sums up the optimism of the SUV drivers. Enjoy.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

This will just remain a cool (or not so cool) toy, unless they increase their range to at least 200 miles per charge; and meet the highway speeds. I thought plug-in vehicles from Big-3 have better specs. Also, Hydrogen-based vehicles are also getting more range than this.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

I can't revise the statistics, that wasn't my best subject in school. So I will leave it to the experts who say the stats between the 2 cities aren't that different, except for theft and burglarly. Evidently there are lots of thiefs in Houston.

I don't expect a Texan to know what culture is. There is more to life than rodeos, nascar and tostadas. There are beautiful rural areas not too far from Chicago and more nice weather days to enjoy them. How many months a year down there is it too hot and sticky to enjoy the outdoors unless you are in the water? 6?

Does the fact that the energy industry is huge by necessity (because of America's insatiable appetite for consumption) somehow forgive them for milking the American public and government, while sacrificing our security, economy, environment and future? I don't hate big corporations, I hate big industries that damage this country because the politicians are beholden to them.

Re: Car for Tree Huggers

Seminole, How kind of you to stereotype all Texans...this is the exact behavior of the libs and dems that is borish and offensive. Lets review your points:

Rodeo : Only been once...... and that was for a concert not the actual rodeo
Nascar: Never followed it and never will.
Tostadas : What the hell are those?

How many nice days we get?
Lets see, only hot humid months in Houston are June, July, August and part of September. How about beautiful days all through February, March and April. Not to mention being able to play golf all year long. yeah that reminds me, you gusy were snowed in during April..so how was that white easter? Did you sit in front of the fireplace long enough to thaw your hands so you can eat?...while I was out on the golf course enjoying the weather?

You can hate the politicians but do not attack the hand that feeds your fellow citziens....that is plain childish and ignorant.
