Car emergency kits

Do you have an emergency kit in your vehicle? What does it contain? Have you ever used it?

Re: Car emergency kits

No one cares :frowning:

Re: Car emergency kits

What do you consider car emergency kit? Tools to perform minor repairs on the car or a shovel/blanket to try to clear snow from around the tires or to keep yourself warm if you ever get stuck in snow?

Re: Car emergency kits

My first car was a rust bucket and since I’m mechanically inclined, I used to keep my tools and a hydraulic jack in the trunk. I don’ think I ever did more than change a tire with it once (on the road that is).

Once the water pump on my friend’s car failed while the car was parked at his work. We picked up a replacement part from an auto-parts store and changed it on the spot.

Re: Car emergency kits

i thought emergency kit meant first aid kit?

Re: Car emergency kits

I meant stuff like a box containing flashlights, emergency blanket, a first aid kit, water pouches, stuff like that…in case you get stranded somewhere and are waiting for help for a very long time…

Re: Car emergency kits

My dad used to keep a fire extinguisher in his car. Never needed it, plus once day we noticed it had leaked.

Unrelated, he blew a tire once, pulled over, got out of the van, went to the back to look for the spare (mounted under the van). Guess what! it wasn’t there. Turns out it’s very common on suv/van that the cable to hold the tire under the car would corrode away from the elements and the spare tires would fall away from vehicles.

I hope manufacturers no longer store spare tires underneath anymore.

Re: Car emergency kits

That is the worst place to store the spare tire. its backbreaking to take off and mount back the tire, plus its dangerous for the trafiic behind you in case of corrosion related fall, like in case of your dads car./

Re: Car emergency kits

Hmm, I bet you to make room for stow n’ go, they’re still mounted underneath. Yes, worst possible place.

Ooh, Late 80’ Subaru’s, the spare tire was under the hood!

Re: Car emergency kits

i used to carry one, and then gave it to someone for a trip, never got it back and have not replaced it.
These days with smartphones, AAA membership its not bad, but back in 90s when i was single and sans cellphone. at minimum I would have some really warm clothes in the trunk. boots, insulated overalls, gloves, face mask, heat packets, much if the stuff bought from camping and hunting shops. some flares, emergency lights, water and some breakfast bars.

Re: Car emergency kits

X2 said it all.
