I am mashaAllah 17 weeks pregnant and cant seem to swallow my vitamin supplements! I am taking Materna, Vitamin D, Iron, Vitamin B12, Osteocare and Vitamin C (which is tasty and in liquid form). I have almost misses one month of supplements! My Hb is 12.8 mashaAllah but this is going to be bad for me in the end if I dont take these ! I vomit as soon as I take them ! I had no sickness Alhamdulillah whatsoever ! These pills make me really nauseaous! I kept putting them off for the next day but nwver seem to convince myself to take them knowing how important they are ! I am from Canada and still with my GP, she has yet to refer me to the Gynaecologist! I took folic acid regularly in my first three months and even took some pills from these supplements! Now they just make me si k as ever! Any suggestions would be helpful ladies
Are you taking all those individually or are all those what your prenatal pill include …? If it’s the first I’m kinda confused to why you’d be taking all those pills when you’re taking prenatals as well (guessing “materna” is a prenatal).
Do not put them off for the next day. They’re meant to be taken once a day so skipping days isn’t doing you any good.
Take it with food, it helps keep them down.
Also … why do you need to wait for a referral from your GP? Why aren’t you making your own appointment at an OBGYN office? Don’t know how it works in Canada but being 17 weeks along you should have had your first ultrasound and tests done already!!!
WendyDarling ! These are all different pills I am taking ! These were given to me by my Gynaecologist in Saudi! I recently came back to Canada and had my ultrasound and everything! In Canada, you need a referral from a GP to go to the Gynaecologist! Materna is a prenatal but my iron, b12, vit d area little low and thats why I have given all these meds on the sode may be or to keep my levels up since I have not been eating very well! All my blood and urine work has been done include Maternal Screening has been done, hence I know my Hb this far along !
Taking with food makes me barf my nerves out even more! I have just started breaking down each pill timings ! Not taking them all at one time has helped me a little today plus splitting one pill into three has made it a little easier to go down the throat! Dont know if it is bad or not, so far this technique worked today! Lets see what other sisters can advise
I need to try them with ice cild water tonight! Also, i love gingerale but I have heard that we shouldnt be taken vitamins with any fizzy drink ! But I will definitely try the icw cold water trick! I should have been on this forum before ! Yiu guys are awesome
Many of friends suggested that something like ginger ale or 7up helped them with taking their prenatals or even digesting food at meal time. Honestly, I am a coke person so I don’t know the difference b/w real ginger ale or Canada dry. I used to take little bit of regular coke or ice water and it helped me with digestion. Another thing that helped was cold Laban. (Yogurt drink at Arab stores).
Your doctors referral for an OB this far along should have been pretty instantaneous. You should follow up and see why it’s taking so long- I’m assuming it’s been a while, however.
Things are done differently here vs Saudi so I’m sure your OB will redo the tests and review all of these additional supplements. You should also ask for a
prescription for PregVit or PregVit 5. It’s broken into two pills and each pill is smaller than materna and doesn’t have that godawful after taste. If you have health insurance, it should be covered otherwise it can be a bit pricey but worth it. I couldn’t stand Materna either- it’s truly awful.
And yes definitely split them up through the day. Taking four pills together would make you feel sick, pregnant or not. I also second coke or ginger ale. Canada Dry is fine. The fizz masks the taste.
Somegroovychick - I got back to Canada in my 15th week and my GP has done all the blood and urine work ! I also had my first ultrasound last week and they told me they couls see it might be a girl but arent sure yet! Do you thunk they could be wrong in 16th week? Also, I am assuming you live in Canada , how was your experience at the hospital here ?
Ah ok, that’s good then. Your OB appointments should be monthly now so hopefully your referral comes in soon. Week 20 is when they do the anatomy scan so that’s another reason for you to see an OB. And yup, I’m in Toronto. I delivered at Mt Sinai and it was a good experience. The nurses there are fantastic. I’ll be delivering there again this time around too inshallah as that’s where my OB is. Where in the city are you?
I am in Etobicoke, just few minutes from Pearson! Which area do you live? MashaAllah good luck for everything! What month are you in ? Do you have to register yourself to the hospital you want or does the OB or GP go by the area code? Its nice to know someone from Toronto love! I have heard very good things about Mt Sinai but it would be a little far from my house
Does the OB do Pelvic exam every month or just in your last weeks? Im dreading that ! I just hate the thought of anything foreign going down there whether it be a finger or a swab! Lol sorry for TMI!
Your GP will choose the hospital. Alternately, you could look for a GP at your hospital of choice too, though, and see if they are accepting new patients. I’m not sure what hospital would be closest to you though… Maybe St Joseph’s or Trillium?
Pelvic exams happen towards the end to check if you are dilated, and of course, when you are in labour. It’s a ways off for you! Don’t worry abhi say!
^ you know, I asked the pharmacist but they said the concentrations are much lower in gummies than in pill form so there’s really not much point to taking them. I was bummed.
Thank you SGC ! I think I might eventually be registered at Credit Valley Hospital or William Osler! I am so proud of myself for gobbling down the pills last night ! I think not taking them all at one has helped me so much, also the cold water trick helped me! Where do you live in TO SGC!
Bella88! Thank you love but my GP said that the gummy chewable ones wont be enough for my needs so I am a little bummed as I was thinking about those too when I saw them at the Shoppers Drug Mart the other day!
